This year the annual commemoration activities focus on “𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐖𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐌𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐦: A Critical Tool in the Fight Against Corruption” The theme will serve as a basis for all anti-corruption stakeholders to reflect and dialogue on the effectiveness of existing legislation and policies, as well as the impact of effective coordination between the investigative, prosecutorial and judicial systems for effective whistleblower mechanisms. Corruption is a source of underdevelopment, it erodes confidence in government, destroys individual initiative by rewarding the crooked, and makes the society poorer. As Africa commemorates African Anti-Corruption Day on 11th July, we believe a robust legal framework to not just punish corruption but to prevent it from occurring in the first place is a sure step in rooting out corruption from society.

Tomorrow marks a vital occasion for reflection and action: African Anti-Corruption Day 2024! 🌍 This day commemorates the African Union’s adoption of the Convention on Preventing and Combatting Corruption. It's a day to assess our progress, acknowledge the challenges, and reinforce our commitment to a corruption-free world. At the Alliance for Integrity, our regional activities in Africa reflect this ambition. Twelve principles have been launched today at #APSACC for Australian Anti-Corruption Commissions to independently and effectively undertake their functions. The principles express a shared approach to engaging with Australia’s obligations under the United Nations Convention against Corruption. 1. The ability to consider referrals from any third party   2. The ability to commence an investigation on own volition (own motion powers)   3. A requirement for the heads of public sector agencies to report allegations of corruption to the Anti-Corruption Commission   4. Protections for whistleblowers and witnesses  5. Coercive powers to obtain information and evidence   6. The ability to refer matters to a prosecuting authority   7. The ability to make recommendations  8. The ability to report on investigations and make public statements 9. A corruption prevention function   10. A sufficient and predictable budget   11. Transparency of appointments   12.
