I've been deeply inspired by Ellen Braae's book, "Urban Planning in the Nordic World." This book explores how Nordic cities have evolved from their initial garden city designs to more modern urban landscapes. The Nordic commitment to integrating innovative planning concepts with practical applications is evident throughout this transformation, aiming to create sustainable and livable cities. Braae emphasizes how these cities were originally influenced by the garden city movement, which prioritized green spaces and communal areas to enhance the quality of life. Over time, as societal needs and environmental considerations changed, these cities adapted. For example, Copenhagen has transitioned from its early garden city principles to incorporate modern urban planning strategies. Today, Copenhagen is renowned for its extensive bicycle infrastructure, sustainable building practices, and mixed-use developments. These changes reflect a blend of historical ideals and contemporary needs, illustrating how adaptable and forward-thinking urban planning can result in vibrant and sustainable urban environments (UW Press) (Aarhus Universitetsforlag). DE ZWARTE HOND AT INNENBANDSTADT-EXPO IN WUPPERTAL. We were commissioned by the city of Stadt Wuppertal to develop a holistic strategy for their city centre. The goal was to not only focus on the Barmen and Elberfeld centres, but to also assess the urban space potential between them and create a unified future vision. From 24 to 29 June, the Wuppertal city council hosts the InnenBandStadt-Expo, which is part of the ‘Sustainable inner cities and centres’ programme by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building of the North Rhine-Westphalia state. This event provides an overall impression of the numerous ongoing project modules further contributes to innovative city centre development. Together with other planning offices, we will present some initial design ideas to the public on 24 June as part of an idea factory, discussing them afterwards. Wuppertal's city centre main characteristic is its ribbon-like structure as a valley axis, which creates good conditions for the 15 or 5-minute city. The project aims to strengthen this spatial strip of Wuppertal's city centre. We look forward to an inspiring exchange with all those present. Lyon's La Confluence district is undergoing a groundbreaking transformation, setting a new benchmark for sustainable urban development. 🌆🌿 Led by renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron and David Chipperfield, this project is turning a former industrial area into a thriving, mixed-use urban quarter. The development prioritizes both social and environmental sustainability, addressing Lyon's population growth while creating a model for revitalizing post-industrial spaces. Key highlights of the La Confluence project: 1. Masterplan focused on sustainability and community integration 2. Three distinct building types: social housing, offices, and mixed-use high-rise 3. Strict energy regulations and limited parking to promote eco-friendly living 4. Innovative designs featuring transparent ground floors and garden courtyards 5.
