Airbus welcomes today's announcements by Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the Queensland Government of a combined $14 million of additional funding for Jet Zero Australia’s plans to develop its first Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) project in Townsville. This is what the industry needs to begin producing SAF in Australia – meaningful government support to help businesses move forward to production. It is also a strong validation of the potential to build SAF production at scale in Australia. Next, we hope the Federal Government will quickly settle supply-side support arrangements and back supply with a demand mandate so the SAF produced here in Australia will be used in Australia to decarbonise aviation in Australia. As an early investor, alongside Qantas, in Jet Zero Australia, Airbus congratulates the company for its work to build a strong case to governments for this support. We thank the two governments for leaning in at this critical time to support Jet Zero’s ambition. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecasts a significant increase in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, expected to triple to 1.5 million tonnes in 2024, representing 0.24% of total aviation fuel consumption for the year. “SAF will provide about 65% of the mitigation needed for airlines to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The expected tripling of SAF production in 2024 from 2023 is encouraging. We still have a long way to go, but the direction of exponential increases is starting to come into focus,” said Willie Walsh, Director General of IATA. Walsh also mentioned that SAF production could potentially exceed 51 million tonnes by 2030, with approximately 140 renewable fuel projects capable of producing SAF already announced and spread across regions including Asia, the EU, North America, and Australia. Global governments are actively encouraging SAF production to reduce airline emissions through incentives and mandates. However, Walsh emphasized that while interest in SAF is growing, current concrete plans are insufficient. Governments have set clear expectations for aviation to achieve a 5% CO2 emissions reduction through SAF by 2030 and net zero carbon emissions by 2050, but they need to implement policies ensuring airlines can purchase SAF in the required quantities. IATA has highlighted several policy actions to boost SAF production, such as diversifying feedstocks, adopting co-processing at existing refineries, incentivizing SAF production at renewable fuel sites currently refining renewable/bio diesel, and encouraging investment in SAF production. Walsh noted that incentives to build more renewable energy facilities, strengthen the feedstock supply chain, and allocate a greater portion of renewable fuel output to aviation would help decarbonize the industry. He also urged governments to facilitate technical solutions with accelerated approvals for diverse feedstocks and production methodologies, including co-processing renewable feedstocks in crude oil plants. Announced sustainable aviation fuel projects represent over three billion gallons of annual domestic production capacity in the United States by 2030, surpassing the target set under the US SAF Grand Challenge target, finds a new report from the US U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), reports Christopher Surgenor for GreenAir News. The announced capacity correlates to over 10% of projected US jet fuel demand, over $44 billion of investment and more than 70,000 jobs across the SAF value chain, says the report, which will be presented at #COP29 in Baku on November 21. The biggest barrier to SAF scale-up remains its price, which is currently two to ten times more than fossil jet fuel, says DOE, depending on the feedstock and conversion technology used to produce it. In October, DOE’s Loan Programs Office | U.S. Department of Energy Office announced conditional commitments to issue over $1.4 billion dollars in loan guarantees each to renewable fuels companies Montana Renewables, LLC and Gevo, Inc.
