The RefuelEU Aviation initiative, aiming to leverage sustainable aviation fuels to reduce EU aviation carbon emissions, is expected to significantly increase the demand for renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs) through a mandatory blending obligation of synthetic fuels. Employing Power-to-Liquid (PtL) technologies, the anticipated demand for RFNBOs necessary for PtL production is projected to reach nearly 370 kilotonnes by 2030 and escalate to almost 16 million tonnes by 2050. Proadpran Tooy Piccini, our senior analyst for Renewable Gas, delves into how the ReFuelEU Aviation initiative is steering the aviation industry towards a sustainable future with SAFs. CR3 has recently completed a catalyst change-out project for one of the world’s leading producers of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel. The CR3 catalyst handling teams worked in rotation to complete the change-outs on a 3-bed Hydrotreater and a 2-bed isomerisation reactor at the client’s refinery in Singapore. The Hydrotreater was unloaded under inert conditions and reloaded under atmospheric conditions. The Isomerisation Reactor was both unloaded and reloaded under Inert conditions. In total, over 420 tons of catalyst was removed. The project was expedited thanks to CR3’s fleet of high-powered industrial vacuum units and the efficiency of our catalyst handling processes, which enabled us to complete the work well within the given timeframe and budget. Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a clean-burning biofuel specifically designed for powering aircraft. It possesses properties similar to traditional jet fuel but has the distinct advantage of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from air travel by up to 80% compared to fossil fuels. As we continue our commitment to a sustainable future, CR3 actively supports Sustainable Aviation Fuel projects and other green fuel initiatives across Asia and the Middle East. It's so encouraging to see this progress in the supply of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) ✈️ Projecting a tripling in global SAF production during 2024 is a step in the right direction, although there's still a long road ahead. #SustainableAviation #GreenRecovery As @WillieWalshIATA rightly points out, while having 0.53% of annual fuel requirements covered by SAF is progress, it's far from the levels needed for airlines to meet their ambitious #NetZero2050 targets. Greater efforts will be required from all stakeholders involved. 💪🌍 IATA's call on governments to implement robust policies and measures that truly accelerate and incentivize greater SAF production is spot on. 🎯 Diversifying feedstocks, offering stable tax incentives, and tapping into sources like agricultural and forestry waste will be key. #RenewableEnergy #GreenFuels The establishment of IATA's SAF Registry to transparently track emissions reductions is also an excellent initiative. Having industry leaders like @AirFrance @KLM @SingaporeAir @Delta already onboard looks promising. 👏🛫 Ultimately, news like this renews hope for a more sustainable aviation industry, but it must be a catalyst to redouble efforts. What other priority measures or initiatives do you see from your respective roles to drive a more decisive shift in this direction? Let's keep this conversation going! 💬🔁 #SustainableTravel #FutureOfFlying #AviacionSostenible #DescarbonizacionAviacion #SustainableAviation #NetZero2050 #SustainableAviationFutures #PtL #RFNBO

What role can synthetic fuels play in aviation’s decarbonization? Zero® Petroleum, a synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) producer, has announced plans to build a commercial-scale production plant – Plant Zero.SA – in Whyalla, South Australia’s Upper Spencer Gulf. Zero Petroleum’s process uses only air and water to produce synthetic liquid fuels, making it a promising solution for the aviation industry’s climate goals. Paddy Lowe, Zero Petroleum Founder and CEO, emphasized the potential of South Australia’s advanced hydrogen industry and government support to scale up SAF for mass adoption. The company is conducting a feasibility study in collaboration with Adelaide Airport Limited and Qantas Airways, with the South Australian Government playing a supportive role. Hon Tom Koutsantonis MP, South Australian House of Assembly member, remarked on the importance of projects like this to decarbonize industries and solidify South Australia's leadership in renewable energy. The feasibility study will assess the viability of a facility capable of producing up to 10 million litres of synthetic aviation fuel, gasoline, and diesel annually, with the potential to create up to 150 full-time-equivalent jobs during construction. 💬 How do you see synthetic fuels shaping the future of aviation? By 2045, the industry will need 636 billion liters of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to replace all fossil fuels currently in use. The projection is from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). SAF stands out as the market's main hope for decreasing emissions over the next few decades: by itself, SAF could contribute around 65% of the reduction in emissions needed by aviation to reach net zero CO2, as estimated by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). One of the main reasons is that it does not require adaptation of the engine fuel system currently in use. Currently, SAF accounts for less than 0.1% of all aviation fuels consumed, which places Brazil as a player with unique opportunities in this market. In this context, we are rapidly disrupting the SAF market by leveraging macaúba oil - a highly competitive native plant from Brazil – through a robust renewable fuels project designed to reduce carbon emissions by up to 80%. With Acelen Renewables, Brazil will become the hub of renewable aviation fuel that the world has been waiting for. #energy #renewableenergy #fuels #energytransition #SAF

Airbus welcomes today's announcements by Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) and the Queensland Government of a combined $14 million of additional funding for Jet Zero Australia’s plans to develop its first Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) project in Townsville. This is what the industry needs to begin producing SAF in Australia – meaningful government support to help businesses move forward to production. It is also a strong validation of the potential to build SAF production at scale in Australia. Next, we hope the Federal Government will quickly settle supply-side support arrangements and back supply with a demand mandate so the SAF produced here in Australia will be used in Australia to decarbonise aviation in Australia. As an early investor, alongside Qantas, in Jet Zero Australia, Airbus congratulates the company for its work to build a strong case to governments for this support. We thank the two governments for leaning in at this critical time to support Jet Zero’s ambition. Setting the right support mechanisms, but perhaps more importantly, the right policy frameworks, will help Australia meet its ambition of being a low carbon liquid fuels super-producer, and this is how we gradually decarbonise aviation – one of the hardest sectors to abate.
