📢 Call for Proposals: What is Home? @ The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery, Waterloo 📢 The Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery invites project proposals from Canadian artists and makers working in ceramics, glass or vitreous enamelling on the theme of What is Home? for a major national exhibition planned for Fall 2025. Proposals should push the boundaries of contemporary craft and installation art, engage with current Canadian social issues to start conversations and promote education and sharing towards the greater good. The theme of What is Home? can be explored within personal or social experiences of topics including, but not limited to: homelessness, foster homes, shelters, couch surfing, cost of living and/or housing, tent cities and encampments, works may also include related themes such as diaspora, refugees, poverty, discriminatory practices, social profiling, mental health, and addiction. New approaches to housing concerns such as A Better Tent City, tiny homes, universal basic income, and community supports can also be explored. Submissions that are representative of the diversity of our community and encourage proposals from artists of colour, Indigenous artists, Deaf artists, artists with disabilities, and members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community are encouraged. 👉 "Copyright and open access for GLAMs in the age of COVID-19" a working paper by Stelios Lekakis (MAZOMOS Landscape and Heritage Consultants) and Mina Dragouni (Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences). Well before the COVID-19 pandemic, a plethora of memory institutions across Europe had been devoted to opening their collections and resources to audiences by harnessing #digitalplatforms and tools, digitising their artefacts, books, archives and other objects of cultural, scientific and historical significance. From early 2020 onwards, the outburst of the pandemic crisis stressed further the necessity to make #culturalheritage open and digitally accessible. In this document, we map available copyright and open access options for cultural organisations, assess distribution policies and reveal data sharing trends in the post-pandemic era. Our overarching aim is to provide some insight into the current landscape, imminent needs and future challenges of the European #GLAM sector to inform future policy. Public art is POWERFUL!

Public art transcends aesthetic appeal, establishing itself as an essential component of humanity's cultural nourishment. In today’s rapidly advancing technological landscape, where digital and mechanical interfaces often dominate our interactions, public art offers a vital respite—a moment of solace and reflection. It feeds the soul and invigorates the mind, reminding us of our shared histories, values, and dreams. By integrating art into our everyday environments, we not only beautify our spaces but also foster a collective sense of identity and understanding, making it a crucial part of our mental and emotional wellbeing.

Friday 25/10 it was finally my turn to attend the Dutch Design Week! With my peers - dutch civil servants who design - we wandered and wondered (😜) together. Our visit to Hall 3 sparked great discussions on impact, methodology, and collaboration - thanks to inspiring projects like Future of Work and Innovation Labs. I was especially impressed by the World Design Embassies, Spiegel van de Stad and De Publieke Ontwerppraktijk (PONT) where government and design come together for powerful conversations. The cartoons captured the essence perfectly! The PONT drinks rounded off the day, toasting to government transformation - which for me as a ‘civil servant who designs’ let me feel Willem de Kooning’s words: “I have to change to stay the same.” 🫣😄 But how to truly change? This question took center stage at Monday’s panel discussion, by EIT Culture & Creativity. The panel explored essential elements of this ecosystem, offering a roadmap for change. You can rewatch the discussion from 0:56:00 to 2:49:00 (skip the break and jump to 02:08:00) or take away my notes: - Creative work is demanding. When entrepreneurs are juggling multiple projects and challenges, the support of a strong ecosystem becomes essential. - Failing is positive because it means you know that it can be better. - Creativity can grow when education changes: teach students to think critically and reflectively - not just how to fit into existing systems. - Reward ideas that drive social good. What if public funding prioritized groundbreaking ideas over those that simply “fit the tender”? (or rewrite tenders 🤭?). - Space for creativity means taking creative people serious and giving them space to let the idea grow, not to take over. - The culture and creative sector should play the role of catalyst to redefine success: not just in terms of financial resources but also in other ways to feel rich. This was exactly the conversation I’d been hoping for. Together with last Friday’s experience, this DDW exceeded my expectations 🤗 And I know I still missed out on many great works and discussions! Next year, I might just have to be there the entire week. ⛺️

Thames Clipper Town Pier Event 17-20 th 11am-6pm The liberal arts media group are a team of 4 women who want to start a community development project and an art management and production organisation. This coincides with the current regeneration projects run by Gravesham borough council resulting from the demand on fairer national political and solution to transcontinental change and unrest. The event - Gravesham borough council have provided an opportunity for artists to host internal workshops on the Town Pier overlooking the river. Our production - LAmg will deliver 3 art workshops over the 4 days sharing the space with other unaffiliated artists. Charlotte will paint a riverscape abstract acrylic piece, Heike will create mental health stories and artwork and Suki and Bruna will generate a photo joiner depicting emotions and human beings from the local space. To make an impact as a group we will design a poster to promote the team’s presence and links to social media – in an attempt to raise the profile of our work. As an organisation we aim to empower citizens to become more active and participate in the public functions of a town. At our event this time we will not be promote active citizenship but we will link it on our poster. Furthermore our united motivation is to start informing the public and professionals about LAmg and how it works. We want to lead, encourage and support discussions about arts, technology and society with a anti-competitive transparent culture around it. Currently we are an emerging amateur organisation utilising passion, critical thinking and fundamental scientific understanding to try and engage community leaders and members of the public to do more to share freedom of knowledge and voice to ultimately attain broader movements in people choosing to understand and exercise their civil rights and liberties. Particularly through more attention to voting for the whole localism (all classes) and greater embracing of education.
