Kerala’s Wind Energy Push The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) aims to promote micro wind energy systems to enhance localized renewable energy generation. Despite solar power's popularity, wind energy has lagged in Kerala. Leveraging the state's 590-km coastline, KSEB plans to install eight on-grid micro wind systems at its facilities. The National Institute of Wind Energy identified wind-rich sites for further exploration, benefiting KSEB, producers as well as consumers. Story Insights by Shreyanshi Pandey KSEB is focusing on wind energy development in Kerala due to the state’s untapped wind energy potential, especially along its 590 km coastline and other windy areas. Micro wind systems, may prove to be effective as they offer a solution to address land scarcity, high project costs, and safety issues associated with large-scale wind projects, as they can be installed in smaller, more localized areas. These systems can also complement larger wind turbines, helping Kerala increase its renewable energy capacity. Off-grid solutions for micro wind systems could be explored in rural areas, providing localized power generation and improving energy access where grid connectivity is limited. This initiative would benefit the state by reducing its dependence on external power sources, also contributing to national renewable energy targets. The development offers business opportunities for domestic micro wind system developers, and for prosumers by enabling them to generate their own energy, reducing electricity costs, and potentially creating new green energy job opportunities.
