Recently, U.S. Representatives Paul D. Tonko and Garret Graves introduced the bipartisan Critical Material Transparency and Reporting of Advanced Clean Energy (TRACE) Act.
This legislation seeks to establish a traceability program at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to develop software systems for digital identifiers and interoperability standards that create visibility into supply chains for clean energy technologies, including batteries.
The TRACE Act could not have come at a more opportune time….
With the recent finalizing of the Clean Vehicle Tax Credit, EV and battery makers are now required to demonstrate increasing percentages of critical minerals and battery components sourced from the U.S. and certain Free Trade Agreement countries.
Globally, Europe’s Battery Regulation requires visibility to prove embedded carbon, responsible sourcing, recycled content and battery passports, while countries like India, Japan, South Korea, and Canada also bolster national policies for transparency into critical supply chains.
Implementing digital supply chain traceability is the only way to meet these requirements effectively.
