"There are still a number of obstacles in the regulation of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). This delays or prevents major investments in #SAF and must change quickly. With our presence at #ILA, aireg will actively work to remove these obstacles and to gain support for the creation of the necessary investment incentives and long-term financing for SAF projects. Together, we can move the needle toward a CO2-neutral future for #aviation.” Melanie Form, Member of the aireg Board and Managing Director 📅 Meet us at our #ILA2024 stand no. 111 (hall 2) in Berlin and speak to representatives from aireg - Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e.V. and our members HCS Group CAPHENIA DHL HH2E Horváth bp EDL Anlagenbau Gesellschaft mbH en2x – Wirtschaftsverband Fuels und Energie e.V. 🛥️ #France’s first #hydrogen-powered river vessel, launched by the Groupe SOGESTRAN, sailed down the Seine in Paris. The 55-metre ZULU 06 has a cargo capacity of 400 tonnes and has been purpose-built to take on urban logistics. LMG Marin AS designed the vessel, encompassing two 200kW hydrogen #fuelcells delivered by Ballard Power Systems and a power generation system supplied by ABB Marine & Ports. ZULU 06, which uses 300kg of compressed hydrogen to power seven days of operation, was developed through the EU-funded Flagships H2020 Project. France’s Minister of Transport, François DUROVRAY, also praised the initiative, labelling it as a “major breakthrough for river transport and the #energytransition in France.” Clean Hydrogen Partnership | Valerie Bouillon-Delporte | Jyrki Mikkola | Ada Martine Jakobsen | Maritime CleanTech https://lnkd.in/eB3muu-d

"We, Griesemann Group, are excited about participating in #ILA2024 as co-exhibitor at aireg - Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in Germany e.V.’s stand! Being a plant engineering and construction company, we feel the need to have our share in energy transition. We pursue our goal of a sustainable future by gradual substitution of fossil resources and supporting the scale-up of innovative technologies for building large-scale plants. With our many years of experience in plant engineering, construction and industrial services, we support more than 50% of Germany’s and Austria’s process industry. Our process know-how and our comprehensive practice focus on trendsetting technologies like Power-to-X, #hydrogen, #biotechnology and #circular and #recycling economy. One day, the acceptance and provision of #efuels will be an essential part of reaching the climate goals. The availability of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (#SAF) in particular. We, Griesemann Group, possess numerous references regarding hydrogen production plants in central Europe and support the building of #PtL plants actively which are absolutely necessary for producing SAF in sufficient quantity. So, we contribute significantly to the furtherance of sustainable fuels. As a family-owned company operating an airline for global ambulance and return flights, we are particularly interested in shaping this sector sustainably. We are looking forward to sharing our expertise at #ILA and campaigning for a sustainable future together", says Uwe Gaudig, Managing Director Griesemann Engineering. Why do we see a surge of interest in hydrogen-made aviation fuels and a declining dynamism in other hydrogen applications? The e-fuels craze, particularly sustainable aviation fuels (e-SAF), provides an opportunity to analyze the importance of public policy design. Schematically, a new technology that is still expensive can be supported either (1) by subsidies borne by the taxpayer, (2) by demand or mandate obligations borne by the consumers of the products concerned (both non-sustainable and sustainable versions), or (3) a combination of the two. Initially, subsidies seemed politically easier because nobody opposed them. But very quickly, the limits of subsidies were reached: (1) state budgets could not keep up, and (2) the process took time. Subsidies need to be implemented and authorized by competition authorities; project developers must prepare complex applications, and the authorities need to organize evaluations. For example, IPCEI and the French CFD have taken several years before a beneficiary receives the first euro, and those who were not selected lost a lot of time. One reason for the significant interest in e-SAF is the quality of the obligations required: 1️⃣ Clear obligated parties: fuel suppliers and airlines. 2️⃣ Clear integration targets that are well staggered over time: a small percentage from 2025 with regular increases every 5 years until 2035. 3️⃣ A sub-quota for the least mature technology (e-SAF), enabling it to be launched immediately without waiting for the most mature technology (bio-SAF) to reach its availability limit. 4️⃣ A clear, high penalty that creates a willingness to pay. These demand obligations are "self-sufficient" and require little to no subsidy, apart from initial projects. In contrast, other hydrogen applications like green steel, H2 in industry, H2 in refineries, H2 for mobility, and e-fuels for maritime do not (yet) benefit from self-sufficient demand obligations. After several years of political debate centered on subsidies, it's time to look at application obligations. RED 3 must be transposed by early 2025. It's time to get started. The speed and quality of application requirements will also be a key determinant of the attractiveness of various European states. #eSAF #aviationfuels #hydrogen #greensteel #mobility France Hydrogène, Simon Pujau, Christelle Werquin, Philippe BOUCLY Hydrogen Europe, Jorgo Chatzimarkakis, Daniel Fraile European Commission, Roland Lescure, Lionel PREVORS, Martin Garrigue, Orianne Chenain
