The good and bad news for aviation fuels this week: ✅ The good: great to see Octopus Energy invest in not one but two #GreenHydrogen e-fuel production facilities from Nordic Generation Fuels' in Finland! 🇫🇮 These are the alternative fuels with the greatest potential to reduce aviation's carbon emissions, and this kind of investment is a huge boost to the market. 👏 🐙 https://lnkd.in/gRgixbaK 🐙 ❌ The less good news... Drax Group has announced an agreement to supply biomass pellets to Pathway Energy's new biofuel production project in the US. 🇺🇸 Not only do biofuels have only a limited potential to reduce aviation's carbon emissions, but come with significant #biodiversity impacts. Scaling up these less-than-sustainable alternative fuels would put nature at serious risk, as our most recent report unequivocally shows. It's disappointing too that Reuters has reported Drax's questionable claims about the environmental benefits of biofuels as fact without noting their significant limitations. We have to get the facts straight on alternative aviation fuels before we can make any headway in decarbonising the sector. 📰 https://lnkd.in/g-YEWNiP 📰 #AviationFuels #Biofuels #AlternativeFuels #GreenAviation

💫 This is a crucial intervention from EU Science, Research and Innovation, giving clarity on the policy needed to get EU aviation in line with climate targets. The report highlights the importance of hydrogen and electric propulsion, sustainable aviation fuels, and an overall reduction in fuel demand in decarbonising aviation. But how will we get there? The analysis concludes: 🇪🇺 Incorporate a place-based approach to the transition that includes coordination between local, national and European levels. 🤝 Align policies across innovation, education, environment, energy and transport. 🛠️ Integrate regulation, taxation and infrastructure measure to accelerate the technological readiness of solutions. This is just the kind of holistic policy approach SASHA advocates, involving cross-departmental collaboration at all levels of government. #EUAviation #CleanAviation #GreenAviation #EUPolicy
CO2 emissions from air travel are projected to triple by 2050. By then, the EU should have achieved net-zero emissions. How can we reduce air travel climate effects? According to our new report, researchers have identified three main elements needed to achieve net-zero aviation: 1. Alternative energy sources: we need innovation in electric and hydrogen propulsion to replace fossil fuels. 2. Energy efficiency: more efficient air traffic management, better aircraft design and a faster replacement of inefficient aircrafts can help reduce emissions. 3. Reduced travel demand: this can be encouraged through measures like removing subsidies to air transport, adopting policies that make the polluter pay, phasing out short-haul flights and promoting alternatives to flying. Sadly we are not on track to meet our 2030 targets in the shipping industry. My colleague Nuala Doyle considers the gap and what needs to be done below 👇
🚢 New blog! 🚢 "Failing to scale truly green fuels allows less-than-sustainable alternatives to fill the gaps instead. This doesn’t just set us back in the short term, but risks locking us into pathways that only get us so far in reducing emissions and come with other negative environmental consequences." As we head into 2025, Policy Officer Nuala Doyle takes a deep dive into the shipping sector's decarbonisation progress, outlining recent reports to see whether it's on track to hit its 2030 targets. Spoiler: it's got a way to go. ✒️ https://lnkd.in/eCQyGyqJ ✒️ Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) | T&E | High-Level Climate Champions | UCL Energy Institute | UMAS #GreenShipping #CleanShipping #AlternativeFuels #MaritimeFuels #CleanMaritime

💶 This week the European Hydrogen Bank launched its second auction to allocate €1.2 billion from ETS revenues to green hydrogen projects. Investing revenues from taxes on carbon emissions is an important way that governments can drive green innovation, and the auction gives an much-needed boost to green hydrogen production. We're pleased to see that €200 million of these funds is earmarked specifically for maritime projects – but we need more assurances that the limited green hydrogen we have is going to the right places: hard-to-electrify sectors, including maritime and aviation. Allowing green hydrogen projects to grow in sectors that have other decarbonisation options is a misuse of the resources we have and only sets back the green transition. https://lnkd.in/dGjDzuR3 #GreenHydrogen #EUHydrogenBank #Hydrogen #EUPolicy

🌏 We were proud to join industry leaders across the maritime value chain at #COP29 calling for faster and bolder action to increase uptake of scalable zero and near-zero emission fuel (SZEF), investment in SZEF enabled vessels, port upgrades and global development of #GreenHydrogen infrastructure that leaves no country behind. Organised by RMI, the UN High-Level Climate Champions, UCL Energy Institute, and the United Nations Foundation, and supporters including our knowledge partner Green Hydrogen Organisation - GH2, this Call to Action demonstrates strong industry momentum to invest in decarbonisation through scalable zero emission fuel pathways. Clearly defined regulation is needed to complement and amplify industry momentum to reduce emissions. To speed up the adoption of hydrogen- derived fuels, we need to bridge the cost gap between fossil fuels and scalable SZEFs, and demand signals that key milestones for practical use of SZEFs are advancing. 🚨Check out our new report! 🚨 The EU must decarbonise shipping and aviation – but at what cost to biodiversity? 🤔 Our latest research shows that if the EU aims to fulfil its shipping and aviation climate targets using #biofuels, it will completely undermine its biodiversity goals by 2050. E-fuels, produced with #GreenHydrogen and renewable electricity, are the only alternative fuels compatible with EU biodiversity goals in 2050. Furthermore, they are the alternative fuel with the highest emissions reduction potential. Our findings: 🌽 Biofuel-heavy fuel mixes, particularly those from biomass crops, pose high risks to biodiversity due to their extensive land use demands. ⛽️ Pursuing aviation and maritime decarbonisation goals using biofuels jeopardises 2050 EU biodiversity targets. 🟢 Of the fuels modelled only green hydrogen-derived e-fuels are compatible with biodiversity targets. Biodiversity impacts from the ‘high e-fuel’ scenario modelled are largely due to the inclusion of biofuels in this fuel mix. What does this mean for EU policy? 🇪🇺 The EU does not have to choose between climate and biodiversity. To protect our nature while decarbonising aviation, EU policymakers must: 💸 Invest in e-fuel production which currently lacks finances and market certainty. 📉 Reduce fuel demand to ease already immense pressures on biodiversity posed by production to meet existing demand. Whether we like it or not, biofuels will continue to be used in fuel mixes despite their biodiversity impact. To protect biodiversity as long as these fuels are used, the EU must: 🌳 Recognise and prioritise the value of using land for preserving biodiversity. 🌡️ Monitor soil health to ensure biofuel production doesn’t reduce soils’ capacity as carbon sinks. 🧑🌾 Promote biodiversity in agricultural practice.
