It’s World AIDS Day, and this year’s theme “Take the RIGHTS path to End AIDS” highlights the link between access to quality HIV services for People Living with HIV and human rights. We can only #EndAIDS when we begin to see and handle barriers in access to HIV and other health services as infringements on the rights of People Living with HIV. Here are a few things we can do: 1. Eliminate inequalities in access to HIV services for all groups especially women, girls and key population groups. 2. Ensure that everyone has access to accurate, timely health education that is tailored to their unique needs so that they can make informed health decisions. 3. Let Communities lead! Communities must be involved in planning for HIV-focused interventions targeted at their members. 4. Talk more about U=U! PLHIV need to know that it is possible to live life to the fullest and that they can achieve an undetectable viral load if they are consistent with their Antiretroviral Treatment (ARTs). So, will you join us as we take the RIGHTS path to End AIDS? #APINInitiatives #ThisIsAPIN #WAD2024 #WorldAIDSDay #WorldAIDSDay2024

The theme for World AIDS Day 2024 is: “Collective Action: Sustain and Accelerate HIV Progress.” According to the WHO, the prevalence of HIV in adults 15 - 49 years of age in South Africa was 16.6% in 2023. That number has not changed much from 16.8% in 2020. Awareness campaigns, education, and improving access to healthcare can lower the number of new cases, and help make sure those with HIV receive the best available treatment. On this World AIDS Day, we reflect on the theme "Take the Rights Path," underscoring the critical role of human rights in eradicating AIDS. As highlighted by UNAIDS, upholding the United Nations Declaration on Human Rights and fostering inclusion are essential for ending AIDS, ensuring sustainable development, and promoting human security. Despite significant progress, challenges persist. Globally, 9.3 million people living with HIV are not accessing life-saving treatment, and in at least 28 countries, new HIV infections are on the rise. These statistics highlight the urgent need to remove discriminatory laws and practices that hinder access to HIV prevention, testing, treatment, and care. In India, the National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) continues to lead efforts in HIV/AIDS prevention and control, emphasizing awareness, stigma reduction, and access to services. Collaborative efforts between government bodies, civil society, and communities are vital to address inequalities and ensure that no one is left behind. As we commemorate this day, let us reaffirm our commitment to protecting everyone's health by safeguarding everyone's rights. By taking the rights path, we can achieve a future free from AIDS. Today I am reminded of the incredible power of small actions to spark big change. A single conversation, a kind word, or a helping hand can ripple through communities, creating a lasting impact. Whether it’s raising awareness, offering support, or standing in solidarity, we all have the ability to make a difference. This is especially true in the fight against HIV/AIDS. It is not just a health issue; it is a human issue. Stigma, inequality, and lack of access to care continue to affect millions of lives worldwide. But together, we can break these barriers. Our world thrives when empathy meets action. It is not enough to understand the challenges others face; we must also step forward to address them. Whether it is through health advocacy, education, or community building, each of us has a role to play. As someone driven by purpose, I am committed to creating spaces of inclusivity, respect, and equity in everything I do. To me, making a difference is more than a responsibility. It is a calling.
