In Khargone, Madhya Pradesh, over 260 farmers have embraced the High-Density Planting System (HDPS) through training initiatives led by Beetle Regen in partnership with CITI-CDRA. HDPS involves planting a higher number of cotton plants per hectare with optimized spacing to maximize yield, resource efficiency, and sustainability. How we are doing it… 1️⃣ By providing access to the right HDPS seed varieties : Ensuring farmers have high-quality seeds suited for high-density planting. 2️⃣ Training Farmers: Educating farmers on sowing spacing, density calculations, and canopy management techniques for optimal plant growth. 3️⃣ Promoting Growth Regulators: Encouraging the use of growth regulators to optimize boll formation and improve their size, enhancing overall yield. In addition to these, other Beetle-supported farmers in Khargone and districts across Maharashtra are also practicing HDPS, further advancing sustainable farming practices and boosting cotton productivity. Punjab Farmers Pioneer Carbon Credit Success with Rs 1.75 Cr Compensation In a groundbreaking development, 3,686 farmers from Hoshiarpur, Ropar, Mohali, Pathankot, and Nawanshahr in Punjab have collectively secured Rs 1.75 crore as carbon credit compensation. This milestone is part of a Rs 45-crore pilot project aimed at incentivizing sustainable agricultural practices and reducing carbon emissions in the region. The substantial payout marks a significant step towards recognizing and rewarding environmentally conscious farming practices. #Foxnuts, or #Makhana, are cultivated across more than 15,000 hectares of water bodies in #Bihar. Over a million families are involved, directly or indirectly, in the cultivation, harvesting, popping, and selling of #Makhana. Despite approximately 20,000 tonnes of popped #Makhana being sold annually from #Bihar, the farming process remains traditional and labor-intensive. A video sourced from social media highlights that popping #Makhana is a laborious, time-consuming, and cumbersome process. It involves a three-stage manual process where the seeds are roasted in a traditional earthen pot or cast iron pan at very high temperatures ranging from 250°C to 320°C, tempered for two to three days, roasted again, and then manually popped using a mallet. The Government of India's ICAR- Indian Council of Agricultural Research, ICAR-Central Institute of Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana, and the ICAR RCER Research Center for Makhana, Darbhanga, are developing a fully mechanized system to produce appropriate agricultural technologies, which will enhance the ecosystem for the Makhana growers' community. Good harvest is crucial for the better life of farmers Our team recently connected with the farmers in Balarpur village of Damoh District, Madhya Pradesh, during the paddy harvest season. We're happy to share that farmers in our Sustainable Agriculture Program reported 15-20% increased production in their demonstration plots. This success is an outcome of the valuable training and crop demonstrations we’ve been conducting over the past 5 months. By providing, timely knowledge transfer on best agricultural practices, we’re seeing the impact through healthier crops, better yields, and more resilient farming communities. Though long-term impacts are yet to emerge, these early signs reaffirm that even small changes and upskilling in techniques can support farming community for improving their lives. POSITIVE / DEVELOPMENT NEWS: While working as a commando, Mukesh Maanjoo had already started preparing himself to take up farming. But in 2018, he was forced to return to his village after his father was diagnosed with cancer. “Six months later, my father lost his life to the disease. His last advice to me was to take up date farming for a profitable farming business,” he recalls. Later on, he undertook a 3-day training programme at the Centre of Excellence for Date Palm at Sagra-Bhojka in the Jaisalmer district. At that time, the state government was promoting date cultivation in Rajasthan by distributing subsidised date palm saplings to farmers. Growing dates have been extremely fruitful as both Barhi and Khuneji varieties give high yields in low maintenance and have lower mortality rates as well. Mukesh procured 250 date palm seeds of both varieties and planted them on his farmland.“If you plant say 100 trees, then only 1-2 will die. The remaining trees will survive and continue to yield for 80 years. Besides, once the seeds are sown, we are only required to provide organic manures like cow and goat dung. Every year, I just add 150 kg of manure to one tree,” he says. He has also created a pond where he harvests up to 3 lakh litres of rainwater. which has helped save 20-25% on irrigation in the dry region. Additionally, using drip irrigation that takes water directly to the roots through pipes and minimises water wastage. He sells all his produce to about 120 consumers based in Gurugram, Delhi, Noida, Chandigarh, and Jaipur. In the past five years, he has received immense recognition at the state and district levels for growing dates organically. In 2018, he was felicitated for the promotion of indigenous breeds of cows for organic farming at the district level under the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) scheme in 2019. S M Sehgal Foundation organized an awareness camp with the children on cleanliness and hygiene under the Sustainable Guar Project in Government High School, village Badopal and Kharlan, Karanpur block in Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, on November 11, 2024. Information on cleanliness and hygiene was given during the session, and children were also made aware of the correct way of washing their hands. Kits for maintaining cleanliness were distributed to the students by the Sehgal Foundation team. A total of 150 students, teachers, and members of SDMC participated in this program. The Sustainable Guar project, supported by Ashland and implemented by S M Sehgal Foundation, aims to improve the productivity of guar and mustard crops by promoting better agronomic practices and conserving water through efficient irrigation practices.
