McKinsey & Co. identified 56 Distinct Areas of Talent (DELTAs) in the areas of Cognitive skills, Interpersonal skills, Self-leadership skills, and Digital skills. The top skills that will be in demand in the future are technological, social and emotional, and higher cognitive skills. McKinsey's research found that the four DELTAs most strongly associated with high incomes were "work-plan development" (cognitive), "asking the right questions" (cognitive), "self-confidence" (self-leadership), and "organizational awareness" (interpersonal). How can adults learn these skills? First, adult learners must see why a topic is useful and how a skill can be applied. Second, education systems may need to be revamped to include more soft-skills training. Finally, training provided by employers must be intentional and focused with a clear goal/purpose. What do you expect the employee to understand and do after the training? Employees must understand why DELTA proficiency is needed. As skills-based employment becomes more popular, each of us must embrace the mindset of being a lifelong learner; how to provide continuous learning and how to be a continuous learner.
