🌱 As we strive for a more just and regenerative world, one thing is clear: our food systems need a transformation. Regenerative agriculture offers a powerful solution, promoting soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem balance. But what does it take to make this vision a reality? On the Future Food Cast podcast, Forum's Global Food System Transition Lead Geraldine Gilbert shares: "Truly regenerative agriculture needs to incorporate social justice, positive social outcomes, and the regeneration of the economics of farming." What does a sustainable food system look like? Is it more local and decentralized or is the key feature technological advances within our current system? With everything going on in the world, it's hard to envision how we can create sustainable food systems but it is absolutely essential we do. I'm personally not optimistic about tech bailing us out of this problem (or many of the ecological problems we face today) and instead that we need to focus on supporting local, low-impact food systems. The idea being that they can serve the local community with essentials and export excess / foods that are difficult to grow elsewhere to places which cannot support themselves. For anyone looking for background on this topic: it was discussed in depth on Planet Critical (amazing podcast, btw): https://lnkd.in/dqXa3ePq There's also a long but interesting read on the future of the food system, especially if you also read Monbiot's post and Smaje's response (both linked in the Resilience article): https://lnkd.in/dJJ4arVu

New Innovation Forum podcast: What EUDR means for the palm oil sector. Joseph D’Cruz, CEO of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), and Olivier Tichit, chief sustainability officer at Musim Mas Group, talk with me about the impact of the EU's deforestation regulation on the palm oil sector. We discuss its potential unintended consequences, such as impacting smallholder farmers’ market access and the development of segregated supply chains. We also talk about some action points for stakeholders across the value chain as the regulation is due to be fully enforced by the end of the year. Plus: PepsiCo achieves its 2025 water efficiency target two years early; the UK government rows back on deforestation-related products import ban; and, the US state of Florida's new bill banning legislation to protect agricultural workers from heat exposure, in the news digest.
