Aquatic Life Institute and 140 members of the Aquatic Animal Alliance (AAA) sent a letter to the European Investment Bank (EIB), raising concerns about their €35M funding for Oceanloop Management GMBH’s large-scale shrimp farming project in the Canary Islands, Spain. 🦐 In the letter, we urge EIB to: ❗Require disclosure of all industrial animal agriculture projects, including shrimp farming, before approval to allow for public consultation. ❗Classify all industrial animal agriculture projects as high risk due to their biodiversity, climate, social, and animal welfare impacts. ❗Mandate clear plans for minimizing environmental impact and supporting animal welfare, covering environmental enrichment, mortality management, and humane stunning/slaughter practices. We thank Aquatic Animal Alliance member, Sinergia Animal, for bringing this important issue to our attention and for providing the context for this action, and to all of our other partners who supported this feedback. At Working Cows Dairy, rotational grazing is more than just a farming practice—it's a commitment to sustainability and animal welfare. By moving their herd into smaller areas more frequently, the De Jong family ensures that their cows have access to fresh forage while allowing the land time to recover. This approach improves soil structure, biodiversity, and organic matter, all while enhancing carbon sequestration. The result? Better soil health and improved water quality in local waterways. Watch the video to see how Working Cows Dairy is making a difference through rotational grazing. #SeeDairyDifferently #RealMilkStartsHere #TheDairyAlliance

Transfarmation—a term I first came across almost two years ago. Back then, I was struck by how promising it sounded, yet I wondered how achievable it would be for farmers to transform their practices in favor of more humane and sustainable methods. Recently, however, I had the chance to speak with a few farmers involved in animal husbandry, and it surprised me to hear how open they are to humane practices 'if' they see a viable, profitable alternative. This realization has been encouraging, shedding light on just how feasible and impactful transfarmation can be. So, what exactly is transfarmation? It’s a process where farmers transition from traditional, often animal-intensive practices to more plant-based or regenerative systems. The goal is to create a win-win scenario: one where farmers earn a sustainable income while reducing animal suffering and environmental impact. It’s heartening to see that with the right support and resources, many farmers are not only willing but eager to embrace these changes, paving the way for a more ethical and sustainable future. #Transfarmation #SustainableFarming #AnimalWelfare #Agriculture #Sustainability #FoodSystems

When you are dealing with Animal Production in our country, you have to face different challenges in different climatic zones. The production is closely related with climatic conditions. In the Northern part of our country, we are facing extreme heat waves nowadays. If you want to combat the climate, your approach towards the animal production system must vary. A sustainable approach is absolutely required. In the summer season, we know that milk production decreases significantly. We must plan our farming in such a way, that up to some extent, may avoid the loss of production. In the poultry business too, this is the most challenging time of the year. Resilient Animal husbandry practice may be the answer. In a country like India, where different climatic zones exist, the approach for the animal production system should be different too. We must consider the climate, and according to that, we have to prepare our plan for sustainable animal husbandry practice.

Very present topic in the last years: Showing and presenting animal protein (white instead of red meat e.g.) as a sustainable solution is one of the tactics the meat industry uses to defend the status quo. In this talk at the #COP29 we discuss the false solutions used by industry and certain policymakers. We have no time to waste and must invest in a plant-based protein transition NOW! Support us and follow our work or join the panel if you are in Baku. #endfactoryfarming #foodtransition #PlanetaryHealthDiet
Join us this Saturday for #Justtransition day at #COP29, cohosted by FOUR PAWS, World Animal Protection, ProVeg International, Changing Markets Foundation, and Mercy For Animals. It will kick off with our panel event "Feeding false alternatives: climate, biodiversity and health risks of upscaling pig and poultry production". As climate mitigation strategies within animal agriculture have largely focused on ruminant production, we will spotlight the various impacts associated with monogastric farming, as well as sustainable solutions. We will hear from Bernard Kimoro, Cristina Romanelli, Sieglinde Snapp, Debnath Nitish, and Irish Baguilat. If you are in #Baku, please join us at the Action On Food Hub at B21, Zone E (Delegation Pavilions) We look forward to seeing you there and discussing true solutions for #climatemitigation, #climateresilience, healthy #ecosystems and better animal farming!

77% of the world's agricultural land is used for livestock-related farming. That is, farming of animals themselves and farming for their feed. Animal suffering, environmental pollution, deforestation and global warming are direct effects of intensive animal farming. Not-so-fun fact: The top five meat and milk giants produce more combined GHG emissions per year than fossil fuel companies like Exxon, Shell of BP. In the meantime, Europeans consume three times the recommended amount of dairy products. Maybe it's time to re-think how we eat and produce food. Explanatory video here: https://lnkd.in/eAbPFeBf
What does animal welfare have to do with climate change? Sophie Aylmer, Head of Farm Animals and Nutrition Policy at FOUR PAWS, explains the trifecta of issues caused by intensive animal farming: animal suffering, environmental pollution and global warming. Some facts: 🌍 77% of the world’s agricultural land used on the planet is used for livestock-related farming, 🐄 Animal agriculture alone makes up 78% of all agricultural methane emissions 🌱 Almost half (45%) of animal agriculture-related emissions are caused by the production and processing of animal feed such as grass and feed crops. 🐔 92.2 billion farmed land animals are used for food (meat, milk, and eggs) every year globally. About 74% of them (around 68 billion) are estimated to be kept in factory farming conditions. The way we farm is not good for animals nor the planet. The solution: making sure policymakers enable and reward farmers for moving away from intensive farming to extensive, outdoor farming models that value animals for their role in the ecosystem. 📽️ Watch the full video here: https://lnkd.in/eZYBk3Nj #DoBetterForAnimals #ClimateChange #LandUse #Environment

🏆 A Special Recognition Award in Sustainable Food & Farming category was presented to Spanish producer Finca Regenerativa Valle del Conde at this year’s Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards. Its olive farm has been dedicated to regenerative agriculture since 2019 when its owners realised that farming could be done differently - by not only respecting the ecosystem but actively protecting, restoring and enhancing it. 🐑 Finca Regenerativa Valle del Conde’s primary focus has been on protecting and enriching the soil, which it views as its most valuable resource. Central to its system are sheep, whose grazing enriches the soil and fosters vibrant, life-filled meadows that support a thriving ecosystem with increased biodiversity. In just five years, Finca Regenerativa Valle del Conde has transformed monoculture olive fields into multi-species grasslands, rich with wildlife – from birds such as owls and vultures to a wide variety of insects. This has resulted in a flourishing ecosystem and high-quality olive oil with an exceptional nutritional profile.
