One policy lever that could help Priority One Western Bay of Plenty to improve sustainability of industrial land is for the council to treat all rental property investors as businesses and collect commercial rates from them. Property investors in NZ already consider themselves to be undertaking a business activity since that is what allows them to claim interest and other expenses when filing with the IRD. The extra rates collected could be used to lower rates on industrial land, and/or to invest into sustainability improvements.

Many will be aware that the Mount Maunganui Industrial Area is an important area for Tauranga and Aotearoa, and one that is falling under increased scrutiny around its environmental footprint.   This is why progress is being made with 29 businesses (so far) in the Mount Maunganui industrial area voluntarily signing an Environmental Accord. Day 2 of National Knowledge Workshop on Advancing Access to Safely Managed Sanitation in Urban Areas 🚰🌍 The second day of the workshop focused on advancing Used Water Management (UWM) and safely managed sanitation under SBM-U 2.0. The sessions provided a dynamic platform for government bodies, states, and sector experts to share insights, discuss challenges, and explore actionable strategies for sustainable urban sanitation. 💡 Key Highlights: Smt. Roopa Mishra, Joint Secretary and Mission Director of SBM-U, MoHUA emphasized the importance of integrated planning, comprehensive data collection, accurate reporting, and real-time monitoring, data-driven decision-making, and proactive communication to drive SBM-U 2.0 initiatives. States including #Punjab, #MadhyaPradesh, #ArunachalPradesh, and #Odisha presented their state-level progress and showcased wide range of innovative solutions to local challenges in Used Water Management. A session on procurement and progress monitoring showcased innovative strategies from #Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, #Maharashtra, and #Karnataka for engaging implementation agencies and tracking project milestones. Presented town specific case studies on innovative solutions for Used water management (UWM), technology adoption, treatment standards, and sustainable practices in urban sanitation. The session also featured the introduction of a UWM manual- Methodologies for Used Water Management Planning, prepared by WASH Institute supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under the Technical Assistance to Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 for Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). When Pekari Apartments approached us, they were struggling with outdated cisterns that used between 9 and 10 liters of water per flush. This led to skyrocketing water bills, frequent overflows due to faulty float valves, and poor flushing performance that required excessive effort.
