🎉🌊 Day 2 at the Nordic Conference on Co-location of Marine Industries is a wrap, and wow, what a day! 🚀 From international governance to business perspectives and the future of ocean multi-use, I’m leaving with so much food for thought (and lots of coffee energy ☕)!
Morning recap🌅:
The day kicked off with a bang as we dove into governance strategies for co-locating marine industries 🌍. Kerstin Bly Joyce and Jessica Hjerpe Olausson gave fascinating insights on their projects—@Greenmeetsblue and Mistra Co-Creating Better Blue (C2B2) - both pioneering sustainability in offshore wind and aquaculture 🎣🌱.
Business perspectives followed shortly after, where Sonja Andrén shed light on the huge potential of low-trophic aquaculture (LTA) and offshore wind farms (OWF) working together 💼. It’s all about diversified income, industrial synergies, and creating new marketing opportunities 💡. I couldn’t agree more on how crucial it is to optimize the whole value chain from sea to land 🌊➡️🌍.
The ambitious ideas kept flowing with Karl Strømsem from SubFarm, who’s determined to make OWF + aquaculture happen despite the challenges 🚧🐟! Although I had some reservations, there’s so much potential innovation happening here that makes you think, "Where there’s a will, there’s a way!" 💪✨
Key discussions:
We dove into the financial incentives needed for multi-use projects, and while profitability isn't always clear, we know that multi-use leads to significant societal gains 📈. It's essential to treat every second-use type—whether it's mussels, algae, or fisheries—individually to make sure cost-benefit analyses are rock-solid from start to finish. 🧐
Oh, and let’s not forget Nordic Innovation's report launch 📊 on barriers to co-location in Nordic seas—definitely worth a read! 👇

The grand finale:
This was a super engaging panel discussion. Nordic policymakers emphasized the need for more collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation 💼🌱. They called for a neutral platform where all sectors can unite for future co-location projects 🌍. I love to see this level of commitment!
Final thought: Exciting times are ahead for co-location in Nordic seas, and while there are challenges, the potential is absolutely enormous 💥! Feeling inspired to take all of this back to the ULTFARMS project and see how we can push the boundaries further! 🌊🔬
