With over 2,000 exhibitors from 49 countries and 190,000 trade visitors from across the globe in 2023, BAU is where the construction world comes together. But what makes events like BAU so crucial for the industry? Eva Maria Herrmann asked our exhibitors for their thoughts. In Heudebouville, Eure, Normandie, France, in the wooded countryside of the seine valley, sits a contemporary school that’s greatest lesson is one in sustainability. Utilizing natural locally sourced materials, and implementing a standard of building with local laborers and manufacturers, the project is hoping to achieve some of the highest standards of sustainability in the region. Built primarily of timber and slate and powered primarily by photovoltaics, the carbon footprint is quite minimal. The slate rooves act as water collection systems, funneling waste water to water basins and being recycled back to water the orchards and landscape surrounding the project. Primarily, the project was constructed off-site, locally, to reduce construction waste and to speed up the manufacturing process. This also increased the projects air-tightness and efficiency in design to further reduce its carbon footprint. In Saint Wolfgang im Salzkammergut, Gmuden, Austria, a contemporary railway station debuted in 2023. A series of canopies rooves allow for an abundance of natural like to illuminate the interior spaces and reduce the need for lighting throughout the day. The state of the art station, utilizes heat pumps for its heating and cooling systems and solar photovoltaics to power a majority of the station. Minimal material usage and locally sourced timber further reduces the projects carbon footprint, and creates a connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. An inspirational sustainable addition to the world of public transportation, hopefully more projects just like this will take shape in our cities. Nowadays, design for climate adaptation is a priority in the built environment worldwide. It was one of the topics discussed during the UIA Congress of Architects in Copenhagen last year, and my findings have already been published in the Congress proceedings. In short, the best we can do is explore new ways of enhancing the living conditions of humans and non-humans in urban environments. Not only by designing new buildings with sustainability in mind but also by retrofitting existing ones.

🌳 🪵 As part of the W.A.V.E. project, the Luxembourg Wood Cluster, managed by Luxinnovation GIE, organised an expert workshop on innovation approaches on 5 November in Leudelange. The workshop was organised in partnership with the project's Belgian and German consortium.   🌳 🪵 This expert workshop focused on innovations in the sustainable construction sector, with a presentation of two outstanding projects showing the specificities of using wood-steel beams and wood-concrete composite beams in static timber construction. The workshop was followed by a technical visit to the ALLEGRA and WOODEN projects. 🌳 🪵 The 60 experts present were able to discuss and exchange views on the advantages and challenges of systemic construction, focusing on the technological and planning aspects of wood composite construction, as well as the differences in regulations in each of the territories and the obstacles that this still creates to greater use of wood. 🌳 🪵 We still need to make further progress in order to take a step back from the experiments that have been carried out and learn from them in favour of wood materials.  Ligne Bois,DLG-AVG Bau, IZES gGmbH, Société Royale Forestière de Belgique and FILIERE BOIS WALLONIE also took part in the discussions. 👉 Well done to Luxinnovation GIE for this excellent organisation. 👏

In the future we will no longer ask “why wood?” but rather, “Why isn’t the building made of wood?” Weleda AG’s Cradle Campus in Schwäbisch Gmünd exemplifies a global shift in sustainable construction, combining extensive use of wood and innovative materials like rammed earth, showcased in Germany’s largest contiguous rammed earth structure. This philosophy closely aligns with British Columbia’s Mass Timber Action Plan, which starts to move us beyond “Why wood?” to embrace wood as the standard for construction. By highlighting the structural, environmental, and economic benefits of mass timber, BC is positioning itself as a global leader in sustainable design. Projects like the Weleda Cradle Campus, presented this afternoon at Forum Holzbau International by Bernhard Tritschler of Holzbau Amann GmbH and Nico Santuario of Michelgroup demonstrate the potential for renewable resources to redefine the built environment while inspiring a worldwide transition to sustainable construction.
