"Our knowledge and education as academics is a privilege, but sometimes, it is also a burden. I can no longer look at polar bears the way a tourist does." Traditionally emotions have no place in science - but what about science communications? Larissa Thelin explores how we can most effectively communicate research. Nisse Greenberg and I have been doing a series of interviews about science communication. Here is the latest episode, where we talk to the director of Econnect Communications, Jenni Metcalfe. She not only communicates science, but she also does research on the effectiveness of science communication. She has also served as the president of @PCST: The Global Network for Science Communication. Hope you find the conversation and a deep dive into these issues useful. #science #sciencecommunication https://lnkd.in/ek_RGYVG

It has been a great pleasure to contribute to the COALESCE SciComm project, by addressing the important role of research funding and science communication policy decision-making when I participated at the #ESOF24 conference. This interview made me think again about what role #sciencecommunication can play in light of current societal debates and challenge. It is in my view unrealistic and counterproductive to ask every researcher to constantly communicate with the public. Everybody has their own strenghts and competences. But there remains a significant potential for a stronger science communication to impact the direction our societies are going. We live in a world where key research areas in all fiends of science including climate change, artificial intelligence or conflict studies are closely connected to critical areas of national and international policy making. So the importance of regular, informed and innovative science communication cannot be overstated. I therefore do not think that we should view #sciencecommunication as a reactive "fire brigade" that plays its role during crises. Instead, it should be seen as a continuous and equal interaction and reflection between researchers and the broader society, of which they are themselves part of. Regular training and support for researchers, and the development of innovative formats can help to exploit the full potential of a sustainable communication between research and society. Research funders can play an important role in facilitating this process, for instance through the #Agora funding instrument of the Swiss National Science Foundation SNSF #ScienceCommunication #ResearchFunding #PolicyMaking #COALESCESciComm

You still have 3 days (March 31) to apply for an Excellence in Science Communications award for science journalists, science communicators, and research scientists. But there's a problem. "Science fiction... [is] not eligible for consideration." No doubt, this is a prestigious and significant award to support science communication, and much gratitude should go to The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and Schmidt Sciences for sponsoring those who are committed to the practice. However... If research is ever going to reach the level of support necessary to advance and thrive in the 21st century with non-experts and the public, we should encourage science-fiction be recognized alongside the achievements of science and the scientists who champion their partnership. From the meticulous rigor of scientific inquiry to the boundless creativity of speculative storytelling, both realms offer indispensable insights into the nature of reality and the vast potential of humanity. In embracing both, we unlock a powerful synergy that fuels innovation, nurtures hope, and shapes the future, reminding us that in the quest for knowledge there is adventure, in science there are an infinite number of remarkable stories, that they are inseparable companions. Where is the prize for not only enriching our understanding of the universe but also empowering us to dream of what lies beyond the horizon, and promoting the curiosity of an applied imagination? What is the value of a future for science without wonder and awe? —————— Apply before March 31 at: https://lnkd.in/eVbjx9DU #science #sciencecommunications #scicomm #sciencefiction #research #communications #appliedimagination #imagination #speculativefiction #designfiction #sciencejournalism

Science communication is not a passing trend It is not a curiosity, "geeky", or cumbersome thing you're force to do to "entertain" kids. It IS fundamental, a base for societal literacy, a right, and a duty. If you're still in doubt, check the important report from Science Europe based on last March' meeting. I was privileged to attend and changed perspectives to include, for example, efforts in comms to policy.. https://lnkd.in/dpDZnViS #Scicomm #ScienceEngagement #SciencePolicy

Understanding #ResearchMethodologies from different disciplines can be a way of breaking down disciplinary barriers and starting #Interdisciplinary conversations. The Horizons Method Link sessions are designed to challenge researchers from different disciplines to find commonality in their research methods and see whether this commonality might present a way to work together. 👋 These event are free and open to all with an interest in interdisciplinary methods - you do not need to be at University of Leeds to join! For the first of our Methods Link sessions, join Prof Stuart Taberner from the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Culture and Dr Dr Andrea Utley from the Faculty of Biological Sciences as they attempt to find commonality in their methods and approach to research. 📅 Wednesday, 26 June 🕛 12 - 1pm 🌐 Online (Zoom) The session will start with participants joining one of our invited academics for a short overview on the methods they use in their research. In the second part of the session, there will be a discussion between the two academics to see where their methods or approaches may be similar. You will also be invited to share observations and ask questions at the end. For more information, and to book your place, please visit the listing on Eventbrite: https://lnkd.in/eqUMEbh7 This is the first of four events.
