📜 New Arctic Circle Journal Entry 📜 ✍ It is important that the traditional knowledge and #education systems that are already in place in #Indigenous communities are protected and supported. ✍ We need to educate about the colonial events from Indigenous standpoints to be able to acknowledge how historical events are still present in contemporary structure—that these are not mere concepts, but the reality of our lives. For First Nations people, 'Country' encompasses not just the physical landscape but the spiritual and ancestral connections we have to the land and sea. Caring for Country, for First Nations peoples, embodies a profound and holistic approach to environmental stewardship that is deeply rooted in thousands of years of tradition and knowledge. Emma Richards illuminates the profound significance of Sea Country to many First Nations communities, underscoring its role beyond mere geography. “Sea Country refers to the importance of the sea and highlights the spiritual connections to marine life and environment and everything that connects with the coastlines.” She stresses "The sea is not just a resource; it's a living entity that sustains and is sustained by our people." Emma Richards' insights offer a strong foundation for educators seeking to enrich their classrooms with First Nations perspectives. By embracing concepts like Caring for Country and engaging with Sea Country, we embark on a journey of understanding, respect, and reciprocity. Watched this BBC documentary of Easter Island's mystery with family to draw lessons for my little ones: -Overconsumption and exploitation of natural resources can lead to ecological collapse. -The pursuit of monumental projects (e.g., obsession in competing to build the biggest statues on Easter Island, symbolic of power) can contribute to environmental degradation and disaster. -Easter Island's isolated ecosystem reached its limits, leading to resource scarcity and societal decline. Our planet also has finite resources and carrying capacities. Recognizing these limits is crucial to avoid exploitation of planet resources. -Competition and conflict over dwindling resources exacerbated societal breakdown on Easter Island, leading to hunger and violence. -Contact with Western colonizers brought new diseases to Easter Island, contributing to diseases and epidemic. Easter Island's history serves as a microcosm of broader planetary issues, offering a cautionary tale about the consequences of unsustainable practices and the failure to adapt to environmental limits. We must learn from history and adopt sustainable business practice to prevent the tragic outcomes experienced by the Easter Island civilization and foster a more sustainable and equitable future for mankind. "Seas and history are strewn with tales and remnants of tsunamis, cyclones, and rogue waves that defy our imagination and challenge our survival. Through millennia the ocean has been cursed for its fickleness and spite, blamed for death and destruction. The ocean, however, has a simple defense against these harsh accusations: it is simply doing the bidding of outside forces. Only when pushed is its fury unlocked," writes Susan Lozier (Georgia Institute of Technology), an educator, researcher, and leader in the ocean sciences community. 🌊 https://lnkd.in/dXZYKQSr TSLR is produced with support from Duke Kunshan University Humanities Research Center. #climate #climatechange #ocean #sea #environmentalism

It's World Oceans Day today and this year's theme is "Awaken New Depths." While we know little of the ocean compared to its immense vastness, what we do know is that the consequences of our actions are evident throughout its waters. When complex systems transition from one stable state to another, the character of the subsequent state is influenced by “small islands of coherence in a sea of chaos” which have “the capacity to lift the entire system to a higher order.” These “islands of coherence” already exist throughout the world—generated by distinct visionary ideas, grassroots movements, and community initiatives laying down pathways toward a life-affirming future. However, as suggested by the principle of reciprocal causality, while these “islands” may form autonomously at grassroots levels, their collective power is significantly enhanced by a cohesive framework that amplifies their energy and supports their trajectory—a “transformation catalyst". https://lnkd.in/d6YqHavw
