It's been a while since Estonia has attracted billion euro business opportunities. Was wonderful to host Power2X delegation led by Peter Daemen at AS Metrosert! Dutch-origin company Power2X is planning an investment of over a billion euros in the Niidu industrial area in Pärnu for the construction of a methanol plant. The proposed facility aims to produce up to 500,000 tons of green methanol annually, utilizing locally sourced sustainable forestry residues and green hydrogen from Estonia's future offshore wind energy areas. The project is expected to create over 2,000 construction jobs and more than 200 long-term jobs, while potentially saving 1 million tons of CO2 annually. Power2X focuses on clean hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol projects across Europe. Headquartered in Amsterdam, the company has a growing team of 70 specialists and is supported by Canadian pension fund CPP Investments. The Canada government has granted CA$1.7M to 14 projects working on transition to green ship technologies. Canada plans to decrease emissions by 40–45% by 2030, to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Its net-zero commitment is indeed codified in law by the ‘Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act’, passed in June 2021. Now, transportation accounts for 25% of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada, making it the country’s second-largest emissions source. Marine shipping is part of it, and emissions from maritime shipping roughly make up nearly 3% of all emissions worldwide. Against this backdrop, the development is important. In fact, these projects fall under the federal government’s Green Shipping Corridor Program’s Clean Vessel Demonstration stream. The office of the Minister of Transport, Pablo Rodriguez, made the announcement about this grant funding. The grant aims to increase the knowledge and ability of Canada’s maritime industry to convert ships to low-carbon or zero-emission fuel propulsion systems. Algoma Central Corporation has secured grants for five of its projects, across wind propulsion, methanol-fuels, shore power, biofuels, and fuel storage. Fednav Limited has obtained grant funding for three of its projects, to explore fuel cells, battery based energy storage, and wind propulsion for marine shipping. In addition to them, The CSL Group Inc., Mersey Seafoods Ltd., Miawpukek Horizon Maritime Corp., Oceanex Inc., Seaspan Corporation Ferries, and Transport Desgagnés Inc. have been awarded grants for one project each. #canada #marineshipping #climate #grant

📣Happy to share a publication in #BalticRimEconomiesReview where I discuss the significance of EU policy for the future of green shipping in the Baltic region. 🌍The Baltic Sea Region Economies represent 37% of the EU’s GDP but 46% of the total installed wind and solar capacity (here I include Germany). When you combine supply-side green energy ambition with the FuelEU and ETS, stimulating demand for green fuels on all voyages in the Baltics, there is a real opportunity for the region to lead on green shipping and fuel production. 🏛️ The Baltic region now has the opportunity not only to lead, but to create followers by replicating these policy instruments at the IMO. The region is a great example of how ambitious IMO mid-term measures can transition the global fleet while building new clean energy economies. In the Baltic Rim Economies' Special Issue on Sustainable Maritime Industry, Rautaheimo Patrik explores the need for predictable, determined policies to reduce maritime transport emissions. 🚢 The maritime industry is at a turning point as we work toward net-zero emissions by 2050. This goal means more than shifting fuels – it requires building new vessels and retrofitting the existing fleet to lower emissions. Elomatic has been a pioneer in greening maritime transport. Since 2010, we have developed numerous ship designs powered by low-carbon energy sources, including recent ammonia-fueled concepts tailored for various shipping companies. Achieving zero emissions in maritime transport demands clean energy and innovative fuel production. Synthetic fuels, like those derived from bio-based materials and green hydrogen, are essential. To make zero-emission fuels competitive, we need stable policies, including a carbon tax, to support this transition. The Finnish maritime industry is ready. Now we need determined policies, a commitment to infrastructure investments, and a fair price on emissions to navigate the Baltic Sea towards a greener future.
