This is a very interesting RCT funded by KCE Trials in eye surgery (we've spared you the gore pictures). The trial aims to determine the most effective corneal transplant technique for treating corneal endothelial dysfunction. This condition is particularly common in the elderly and can have a significant impact on vision and quality of life. The study is halfway through recruitment. Great virtual conference last week, on #AATD, by the Alpha-1 Europe Alliance asbl and others. ⚠️One of the crucial take away points for me, was the emphasis put on the tremendous variability in the severity of symptoms. 📉Especially in terms of deterioration of lung function, there is enormous variability between individual patients. This specifically was called out as a real challenge. 💭For patients, it is making it difficult to project their future. The uncertainty is undermining the ability to plan ahead, for many people living with #AATD. ⁉️For clinicians, it is making it very difficult to assess how to best manage this disease, and when to push harder for interventions that may not be readily reimbursed in a given healthcare setting, but could make all the difference to a patient who might be facing rapid decline in lung function. ⏭This means we need to double down on the effort developing highly predictive outcome models, that can help doctors risk stratify patients better, and allowing more proactive interventions, before more significant lung damage occurs. 📈For better outcomes for patients.
