Hello #connections Climate change is not new to us. We all know about climate change and we all have experienced it. It was a very minor change in the past, but today, it has turned into a serious issue, which requires immediate action. The forest fires, landslides, floods are increasing at a very high rate. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR IT? NOT THE INDUSTRIES, NOT THE GOVERNMENTS, NOT THE POLICY MAKERS. IT IS WE, THE HUMANS. Recently, there was a serious forest fire 🔥 in Los Angeles, California. The fire spread at top speed and there was very little time for the people to evacuate. We have made the planet 🌏 warm, now it’s time to pay for it. Friends, I urge all of you to take small steps towards mitigating climate change, as it is high time we did something for it. Let us all pledge to reduce our #energy consumption, as in a world of finite resources, the consumption should also be finite. Your salaries would increase, your bank balance would improve, the #GDP of the country would increase, but the size of the planet won’t increase. Hence, we need to limit our consumption. ⚠ After an extreme weather event, people often ask: Is #climatechange to blame, or would this event have occurred regardless? 🔭 This is precisely the type of question that the World Weather Attribution (WWA) initiative (a team of researchers from various institutions analyzing the extent to which extreme weather phenomena can be linked to human influence) aims to answer. How do they do it? It is called, "attribution study". Simply put, they use simulations to compare the likelihood of a particular event occurring in a world influenced by human activity (including climate change) versus a world without such influence. 🖊 A few days ago, the initiative published its analysis of the recent heavy rainfall in central Europe that affected almost two million people. They assessed the extent to which human-induced climate change affected the likelihood and intensity of the heavy precipitation that caused severe flooding. Their findings concluded that: -Human-induced climate change has doubled the likelihood of 4-day heavy rainfall events and increased their intensity by 7% (and these are conservative estimates) - Under a future warming scenario with global temperatures 2°C higher than pre-industrial levels, climate models predict even more intense 4-day rainfall events, with a further 5% increase in rainfall intensity and a 50% increase in likelihood compared to today. 🌍 The implications of these findings are clear: as our climate continues to change, extreme weather events will become more frequent and intense. Understanding these trends is crucial to developing effective #mitigation and #adaptation strategies. Now, more than ever, it’s important to act and prepare for the climate challenges ahead.

Climate Change’s Unpredictability: A Water Utility Perspective 🌍 In conversations with Vera Lagendijk, one key takeaway stood out: while we often focus on the direct effects of climate change, it’s the unpredictability that presents one of the greatest threats. This is especially true in the water sector, where resilience becomes not just a goal but a necessity. Water utilities play a crucial role in climate resilience, yet they are under immense pressure to adapt to erratic patterns—whether it’s managing droughts, floods, or ensuring access to clean water despite these challenges. As climate change intensifies, the ability to predict and respond to water-related risks becomes even more difficult, making long-term planning a constant challenge. The solution? We need to innovate, invest in sustainable water infrastructure, and implement adaptive management strategies that account for the uncertainty we face. This is a critical moment for the sector, and it’s time we build systems that can withstand and thrive amidst this unpredictability. Brutal heatwaves and submerged cities: what a 3C world would look like Climate scientists have told the Guardian they expect catastrophic levels of global heating. Here’s what that would mean for the planet Global heating is likely to soar past internationally agreed limits, according to a Guardian survey of hundreds of leading climate experts, bringing catastrophic heatwaves, floods and storms. Only 6% of the respondents thought the 1.5C limit could be achieved, and this would require extraordinarily fast, radical action to halt and reverse the world’s rising emissions from fossil fuel burning. However, the experts were clear that giving up was not an option, and that 1.5C was not a cliff-edge leading to a significant change in climate damage. Instead, the climate crisis increases incrementally, meaning every tonne of CO2 avoided reduces people’s suffering. “Climate change will not suddenly become dangerous at 1.5C – it already is – and it will not be ‘game over’ if we pass 2C, which we might well do,” said Prof Peter Cox, of the University of Exeter, in the UK. Dr Henri Waisman, at the IDDRI policy research institute in France, said: “Climate change is not a black or white question and every tenth of a degree matters a lot, especially when you look at the socioeconomic impacts.
