What are your thoughts about hiring a freelance editor? Does it make you nervous? Do you wonder if they're actually qualified? Would you hesitate to hire a freelancer who is just starting out? Why? While it's true that not all editors have the same level of experience or even expertise, there are ways to ensure you are hiring the right freelance editor for the work you need to have done. The first thing is to start a conversation with them. I'm a freelance copy editor and I work in the following areas: Equestrian - fiction and non-fiction Art & Art History - fiction and non-fiction Romance Cozy Mysteries Let's start a conversation! 🙂 #copyeditor #equestrian #romance #cozymystery #arthistory

We look for 3 things when hiring freelance editors and writers: 1. Skillset 2. Culture fit 3. Dependability __Note - this is just how we operate. Some may not like it, and that's ok. That just means we're not a fit, and that's also ok!__ *Skillset* Point blank, you have to be able to do the work. You need to show examples of work you've done and be willing to do a test project so we can see your rough work product and how much additional work it might need. *Culture fit* We look for skilled creative, open, and fun people to work with. We look at social media profiles, have a conversation before we hire, and make sure there's alignment and buy in from everyone internally before we extend an offer. *Dependability* One of the reasons we have all potential hires do a paid test project is because we need to know that you can communicate and return work on time. If someone has a TON of questions about a well-defined test project, they're probably not a great fit for us culturally. If they agree to a certain delivery date and ask for an extension (or send it in late!), they're not a fit. NOTE - I have nothing against someone whose work needs more finesse than we can give, who has a different attitude towards work than we do, or who has a hard time organizing themselves! It just means we're not a fit at this time. Find the hires or clients who fit with YOU. My list is probably not your list, *and that is ok!* What matters is that you have your own list. John (PS let me know your list below 👇)

Sooooo I am seeing so many "we're hiring" posts for content writers and copywriters that list 4,598 that the writer will be expected to do and ZERO indication of what the pay will be. Honestly, I've just started to scroll on by when that information is lacking, and I'm sure I'm not the only freelance writer, who would make a great addition to your team, that is doing so. You gotta share those rates! #recruiters #contentwriter #contentmarketing #hr #humanresources

How great would it be if every freelance writer call included some very basic information like... 🟢 Company name 🟢 Industry 🟢 Project type 🟢 Hiring timeline 🟢 Pay rate 🟢 How to make contact Something like this... 🟢 XYZ Corporation 🟢 Real estate 🟢 Copywriter for new SaaS product 🟢 Hiring decision will be made within seven days 🟢 $1/word 🟢 firstname (at) xyzcorporation (dot) com I'm probably missing a detail or two but the point remains the same. It's not that hard to give writers the info they need to decide if they should apply. Bonus: companies that include this information are not nearly as likely to get swamped by unqualified candidates. That's all for today ;)

I came across a post where an agency owner was unable to hire an exceptional writer to handle his brand's growing content needs. It is important to understand the following aspects when you hiring a freelance writer: - Realistic timelines so that content quality is not compromised - Competitive pay according to the value and impact they bring - Do not ask them for free unpaid assignments - Understanding that human-centric content is here to stay Think from the perspective of a writer, and you will understand the situation in a better way. If you as a brand or company face challenges in hiring quality writers, let's talk more about it. Do you think finding the right writers has been a challenge for your brand?

Apparently we're hiring writers again. I'm going to point out that I phrased that exactly as intended. To be clear, neither I nor anyone actually at SlashGear actually are in charge of the initial hiring. That's all done by Static Media (our parent company). You are welcome to ask me about the opportunity, work culture, etc. I'll be happy to give you the 411 -- TL;DR It's great, but there's baggage like anywhere else. But if you want to know who to contact about this job listing, I'll give you a big 'ol shrug emoji, because we don't see writers until they pass the initial filter of Static Media. Here's what I can tell you about the job - Pay is $21/hour or $0.08 per word. That's not amazing, but also not the worst out there. - Topics are very SEO heavy. If you're writing about it, chances are 20,000 people are searching for it on Google right now. - Topics have also been VERY car-heavy for a long time. Think best lists for cars. Look at SlashGear.com and you'll get an idea of what we've been publishing recently. If you're a tech writer, those topics are significantly fewer, though once you're in, we will consider pitches, but remember the 20,000/Google thing. Good luck, and maybe we can share a Slack room some time ;-).

Freelance writers? Or know one... SageMG has some opportunities for a contract copywriter. If you are interested, or know someone that might be interested, please send resume and interest to doug@sagemg.com Update: Thank you for all the shares and inquiries. I have been overwhelmed. At this point I cannot accept any more inquiries until I sift through the current replies. Thank you. 10/24 7:00am MST Update 2: With 10s of replies we are going to have to pare down to writers within the United States. There are many instances when our writer might have to connect with our team or client (especially kickoff meetings) that will dictate a more traditional work schedule for all parties.

Sometimes clients just can't get out of their own way when it comes to hiring freelance writers. - 2 were able to source, hire, and pay me within a week of the inital contact. - 1 did it within 2 days (wow.) - 1 took nearly a month as I had to sign up to their procurement platform, go through the onboarding process, and wait for the bank connections to go through. - Another 4 prospects reached out and then never got back to me despite repeated outreach email attempts. Guess which ones I'm still working with? All of this to say, companies, you've got to make it easy for your marketing managers to hire outside help, especially if you're not going to give them the budget to hire internally so you can handle all the overhead. If you're a B2B tech company who needs help with your marketing and can onboard a freelance copywriter quickly, LMK. I've got space on my calendar for 1-2 new clients in Q1 2025 and I'd love to help you with human-led content. Fine me at julia at spacebarpress dot COM.

2 months ago, I came across a Job posting that made me second-guess my life. It was WILD. You ever see a job description as a remote worker and think, “Who even wrote this?” One time, I stumbled on a job ad on a Freelance platform I read it once, blinked, then read it again. Nope, it was real! It was for a ‘Junior’ Content Writer role: - Must write 30 viral blogs/month - Must manage 3 social media accounts like a pro. - Must create ad campaigns that actually convert. - Must design graphics worthy of an art gallery. - Must be available 24/7 and thrive in chaos. Oh, and the pay? $25/month. (Low budget Miracle worker 🙌🏻) I didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or apply just to see what kind of chaos awaited. To this day, I still wonder, did someone actually take that job?? PS: Have you come across these kinds of job descriptions? Let’s discuss.
