"What we don't understand, we explain to each other" I welcome all Technische Universität München students to the new summer semester 2024. We from the TUM Autonomous Vehicle Systems Lab are kicking off the new semester with a new lecture called "Ethical Robot Systems - Teaching Robots Right from Wrong". The goal is to provide our students with a deep insight into the fundamental contexts of machine ethics, with particular application to robotic systems. As you embark on this new academic journey, I encourage you to approach each day with curiosity, passion, and a willingness to learn. Whether you are returning to campus or joining us for the first time, your studies at Technische Universität München offer you a wealth of opportunities for growth and exploration, both inside and outside the classroom. As we navigate this ever-changing landscape, we must support one another and stay connected as a community. Together with my team members Korbinian Moller, Felix Jahncke, Marc K., Alexander Langmann, Baha Zarrouki, Frederik Werner, Rainer Trauth, Roberto Brusnicki, Yuchen Zhang we can make this semester together with you as a student a success and create a brighter future for ourselves and those around us.

In two days, I’ll be hopping on a plane to Denmark! 🇩🇰 Why Denmark? Well, among the many reasons, the main one is that I’ll be attending two incredible robotics conferences—ROSCon and ICSR. For those who don’t know me, I have a deep passion for robotics software, especially ROS2. Outside of my day job, I spend my free time working on robotics projects, mentoring the NASA-sponsored FTC-6323 "Pink Team", and pursuing my master’s in computer science with a focus on robotics through Georgia Tech’s OMCS program. When I learned about ROSCon, I knew it was something I needed to attend—both to advance my career and grow personally. ICSR also happened to be at the same time, so I signed up for that too. This trip is not work-related, and to be honest, it’s way outside my comfort zone. It’s my first robotics conference, my first time in Denmark, and my first solo international trip. Am I nervous? Absolutely! But I’m also excited to learn, connect, and grow. I’ll be sharing updates on my website andrewponce.com, so be sure to check it out for daily posts about my experiences. WACV Paper Alert ! 🚨 I am happy to annonuce that our work "S3PT: Scene Semantics and Structure Guided Clustering to Boost Self-Supervised Pre-Training for Autonomous Driving" was accepted for WACV 2025 ! We propose S3PT, a scene semantics and structure-guided clustering method, to provide more scene-consistent objectives for self-supervised learning in the autonomous driving domain. Our approach addresses challenges such as imbalanced object class and size distributions, as well as complex scene geometries. Our learned representations significantly enhance performance in downstream tasks like semantic segmentation and 3D object detection on the nuScenes, nuImages, and Cityscapes datasets, while also demonstrating promising domain generalization properties! The second project from last semester that I wanted to reflect on is from my Introduction to Research in Informatics. This class dealt with more qualitative research while working with a topic of our choice the whole semester in a group.  I came into the class knowing that I wanted to do something related to either cars or racing. But I ended up going with Electric Vehicles. From there the question evolved into their use as taxis to showcase their reliability. Throughout the semester my group learned different aspects of making project proposals for research. 🎓✨ Senior Spotlight: Meet Abby Cassell, Our Robotics Engineering Technology Student! ✨🎓 🔧 Major: Robotics Engineering Technology (ROET) 🔍 Why I Chose It: My love for robotics began in elementary school after my grandmother had robot-assisted surgery. That moment sparked a lifelong interest, which only grew stronger throughout middle and high school. My experience in VEX robotics competitions solidified my choice to pursue a career in engineering. 🎉 Most Memorable Experience at Purdue Polytechnic Columbus: Watching high school students compete in the Boiler Tech Challenge. Seeing their passion for engineering was truly inspiring. It’s incredible to witness others be just as enthusiastic about something they love. 💡 Post-Graduation Plans: I aim to secure a role in the robotics field and spend more quality time with my husband. 👩🔧 Who Has Inspired Me: A collective of strong, respected women has shaped my journey, including Dr. Nancy Lollar, Melissa Ressino, Ruiji Sun, Missy Casner, my grandmother Ann McAfee, and my sister Hannah Cowles. They've shown me the value of hard work, passion, and balance. 📚 Advice for Incoming Students: Plan your semesters carefully and take detailed notes! Each class is unique, and some will require more time than others. Stay on top of your assignments and labs, and trust me—your notes will be invaluable later on! 🤖 Anything Else: Purdue Polytechnic Columbus is like a second family. As I begin my final year as Student Ambassador President, I’m thrilled for what’s ahead. Being part of this program has solidified my confidence and love for engineering. #DYK #ArmyJROTC has its own VEX Robotics Competition? VEX Robotics is just one of the #STEM based co-curricular activities JROTC offers. STEM helps foster education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math disciplines. Every year, JROTC Cadets from around the country come to Dallas, Texas, to test the robots they’ve created in a gauntlet of challenges hosted by VEX Robotics. VEX is a robotics program used to educate students Elementary to College through science and engineering principles in an environment that encourages creativity, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
