We from the TUM Autonomous Vehicle Systems Lab are kicking off the new semester with a new lecture called "Ethical Robot Systems - Teaching Robots Right from Wrong". The goal is to provide our students with a deep insight into the fundamental contexts of machine ethics, with particular application to robotic systems. As you embark on this new academic journey, I encourage you to approach each day with curiosity, passion, and a willingness to learn. Whether you are returning to campus or joining us for the first time, your studies at Technische Universität München offer you a wealth of opportunities for growth and exploration, both inside and outside the classroom. As we navigate this ever-changing landscape, we must support one another and stay connected as a community. Today I had the pleasure of being a guest speaker for the inaugural ceremony at the statewide, robotics competition for FTC teams. As technology evolves at an unprecedented pace, it's crucial that we nurture and support young talents who are not just the future of robotics but of our world. These brilliant minds are breaking barriers, pushing the boundaries of what we thought was possible, and reshaping our approach to problem-solving in real-world scenarios. The second project from last semester that I wanted to reflect on is from my Introduction to Research in Informatics. This class dealt with more qualitative research while working with a topic of our choice the whole semester in a group.  I came into the class knowing that I wanted to do something related to either cars or racing. But I ended up going with Electric Vehicles. From there the question evolved into their use as taxis to showcase their reliability. Throughout the semester my group learned different aspects of making project proposals for research. What an honor! My brilliant PhD student Bruno Ferrarini has won the runner-up award for the The Queen Mary UK Best PhD in Robotics Competition. This prize is presented on an annual basis to the best PhD thesis in the area of robotics in the United Kingdom. The award decision this year was made based on the reviews from an excellence committee consisting of top roboticists from around the world (Tamim Asfour, Maren Bennewitz, Yiannis Aloimonos, Cecilia Laschi, Giulio Sandini, Aude Billard, Jose' Santos-Victor, Carme Torras, Takayuki Kanda, Veronique Perderau, Jee-Hwan Ryu, Serena Ivaldi, Matteo Fumagalli, Alessandra Sciutti, Kazuo Kiguchi, Rania Rayyes, Shinichi Hirai, Ruwan Gopura and Isuru Godage). Bruno was co-supervised by Prof Klaus McDonald-Maier at the University of Essex. A special thanks to Prof Michael Milford for his continuous support and guidance throughout Bruno's PhD research. We could not have done this without you, Michael Milford! Bruno's PhD thesis titled "Improving Visual Place Recognition in Changing Environments" made significant contributions to the field by proposing novel binary neural networks for solving the visual place recognition problem for resource-constrained robotic systems (such as drones). 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲... This year, I graduated with a Bachelor's degree from Warsaw University of Technology. I've always tried to get the 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 out of my studies, involving myself in 𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗯𝘀, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. 🔬 I truly immersed myself in the world of science. In my second year, I joined the ADek Science Club WUT. At the time, developing 𝗔𝗜 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘃𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺. ✨ I remember that my first major assignment took me a 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮 𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳, while now, I can complete 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗸𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀. Most importantly, that experience led me to discover my passion – 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, which I am still dedicated to today 🤖 I realized that I am genuinely interested in decision-making algorithms. 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀, 𝗜 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀, 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗣𝗢 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗤𝗡 𝗮𝗹𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗺𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. 🤘 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗜 𝘄𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗺𝘆𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳! #hiring PhD students to the Alexander von Humboldt Professor group of André Platzer and DFG Sonderforschungsbereich at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) to help make cyber-physical systems such as cars, aircraft, and robots safer. Our research group develops the logical foundations for cyber-physical systems and practical theorem proving tools such as KeYmaera X for analyzing and correctly building such systems.
