Bridging the Knowledge gap: Intellectual Property Awareness in Tanzania. Intellectual property plays an important role in helping business to thrive in the market, it is a tool for branding, encourage creativity and innovation, provide a competitive advantage, create streams of revenue among many others, however, most of businesses especially in developing countries are yet to utilize intellectual property of their businesses for them to thrive. This is caused by among other factors, lack of awareness on the important of intellectual property. Kudos to EUIPO - European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) as they recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aiming at strengthening cooperation in Intellectual Property awareness and education. The two institutions aim at combining resources such as EUIPO's extensive expertise and UDSM's academic excellence for the purpose of empowering future generation with the knowledge and skills to thrive in the knowledge economy. Why is building a culture of constitutionalism in Myanmar as important as drafting a post-coup constitution? Examining Myanmar's constitutional history reveals a chronic lack of constitutional rule of law and the absence of a culture of constitutionalism. The now-defunct 2008 Constitution effectively granted the military veto power and enshrined a culture of impunity, which made it difficult for the rule of law to emerge. The unconstitutional coup in 2021 displayed a drastic disregard for the rule of law by the military. How can Myanmar build a culture of constitutionalism where rules and principles of a constitutional order are followed to ensure that a new constitution not only reflects Myanmar’s post coup reality but also serves as an effective and workable instrument for the exercise of state power, in particular in a decentralized system that requires multi-tier governance on the basis of clear rules and procedures? Some days ago I discussed these questions with Professor Andrew Harding, a renowned scholar in Asian legal studies and comparative constitutional law. We explored some of the challenges of establishing constitutionalism in Myanmar, lessons from other countries, the importance of civic education on constitutional matters, and the role of constitutional review mechanisms. We also delved into the concept of cooperative federalism and its implications for the relationship between central and federal units in Myanmar. 📣 Published in the Journal of Liberty and International Affairs 📣 "Exploring the Effectiveness of the Human Rights Court in Indonesia: A Call for Humanitarian Action" Read the article at: https://lnkd.in/d5t_9TNS Authors: Ria Wierma Putri, Faculty of Law, Universitas Lampung, Indonesia Yunita Maya Putri, Faculty of Law, Universitas Lampung, Indonesia Eddy Rifai, Faculty of Law, Universitas Lampung, Indonesia Abstract Indonesia’s Human Rights Court, established under Law No. 26/2000, has faced criticism due to persistent unresolved cases, highlighting flaws in its legal foundation. The Court’s performance revealed that Indonesia has been ineffective in resolving serious human rights violation cases. This research emphasizes two main points: 1) exploring human rights enforcement in Indonesia based on the effectiveness of the Human Rights Court’s performance, and 2) scrutinizing the context of humanitarian intervention in cases of gross human rights violations in Indonesia. The article utilized a normative juridical research approach, followed by a descriptive analysis through a literature study. The research illustrated that human rights enforcement in Indonesia was inadequate, often stalling at the inquiry stage. Trials for the 1984 Tanjung Priok massacre, East Timor, and Abepura resulted in acquittals, raising doubts about the effectiveness of the Human Rights Court’s Law (No. 26/2000). Furthermore, humanitarian intervention was deemed necessary to address these unresolved violations, viewed not as a violation of sovereignty but as a means to enhance human rights protection. This requires national and international cooperation, focusing on resolving cases rather than debating jurisdiction. Keywords: #HumanRights, #Court, #HumanitarianLaw, #HumanitarianIntervention #jlia

Preparation, consistency and relentless perseverance to achieve one's goals despite adversity. These are the values that I align myself towards in both my professional and personal life. Reflecting on 2023, I am thrilled to share that in pursuit of these aspirational values I have achieved a few significant milestones. 1) I have successfully completed my LLB (hons) degree, with merit, from the University of Pretoria . I obtained several distinctions in fields such as #InternationalTradeandInvestmentLaw, #BankingandFinanceLaw, and #InformationandCommunicationsTechnologyLaw amongst others. I am keen to explore my passions of these areas of law further in due course as they have key interlinks and importance in creating a legal environment in which #economicgrowth in South Africa can be reignited. 💡 📈 This is something that I am deeply passionate about. 2) In keeping with my passions for #internationaltradelaw, I set out last year to engage in critical analytical legal research of the institutional and regulatory regime that governs South Africa's #SpecialEconomicZones (SEZs) contained in the SEZ Act 16 of 2024. I am proud to say that I was awarded a distinction (77%) for this as well by my supervisor: Mr Mmiselo Freedom Qumba. I could not have done this without his sound judgement, constructive criticism and guidance. The aim was to investigate whether the legal regime governing South Africa's SEZs is truly effective and "special" enough to deliver the intended outcomes of SEZs such as: increasing levels of foreign direct investment 📊 💸 #fdi ; bolstering #manufacturing of labour-intensive goods 🛠 ; increasing the #employment prospects of a large pool of the unskilled labour force in South Africa 💼 ; and encouraging greater levels #tradeexports of South African manufactured goods to key markets across the continent of Africa (given by opportunities presented by the #afcfta) and internationally as well 🚂 🚚 ⚓ 🚢 . The significance of my research was that many analyses of #SEZs have been formulated from an economic perspective but a few have tackled this subject from a legal perspective ⚖ . Development since this dissertation was compiled has ensued, but the requisite message is still same: South Africa is not doing enough, as part of #industrialpolicy tools, to make SEZs "special" enough to deliver on its intended economic mandate due to both institutional and regulatory failures. 3) Light-heartedly, I competed in the prestigious Soweto Marathon and successfully completed the 42KM race in sub 5 hours. This achievement was a significant improvement in my previous achievement of completing the Johnson Crane Provincial 42KM Marathon championships early last year. This is are a testament to the fact that achieving one's professional goals is not a sprint but a marathon. Embarking on my next chapter, I am eager to utilise the character traits, skills and knowledge I have obtained to pursue exciting new opportunities that lie ahead.

Let’s talk Q2 goals and how we did🤭 It is increasingly becoming my habit to post a general recap at the end of each quarter regardless of how it went. This helps me better account for the things I set out to do. (Of course, NOT ALL THINGS ARE MADE PUBLIC😁) Anyway, for QUARTER 2 - APRIL TO JUNE (and in no particular order); 🔸 I officially started the French course with Alliance Française in Accra later than planned. (Ce n’est pas facile😅) 🔸 I started a monthly newsletter, THE GREEN DIGEST, on LinkedIn and I have published two editions already. June’s edition is delayed but set to be published soon.✍🏾 (Subscribe here: https://lnkd.in/dtW-6CCT) 🔸 I completed a three-month climate diplomacy program with KAS which was crowned with a conference at Strathmore University in Nairobi.☘️✈️ 🔸 Recited a poem centred on climate change rather impromptu during the conference in Nairobi. (And sold some book copies!)😁 🔸 I completed an eight-week course “AiCE – AI Career Essentials” with ALX GHANA👩🏾💻 🔸 I completed my three-year POSTGRADUATE LL.B DEGREE with Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).👩🏾🎓 🔸 I received an ACADEMIC AWARD for being the BEST IN CONTRACT LAW for the 2023/24 graduating year group during the GIMPA Law Students’ Association Dinner.🥹🏅 🔸 Still behind on reading with my book reading club.🤭 🔸 I received some rejection emails for certain opportunities I applied for.😭 (will talk more about these when I muster the courage to do so) How did you do in Q2?😄 As always, the road remains onwards and forward! Q3, HERE I COME!!!! #growthjourney #quarter2 #reflections —— Abigail Anyomi is on a mission of helping you turn your lemons 🍋 into lemonades🍹 focusing on the little things.
