Chinese President Xi Jinping has vowed to defend Tajikistan's territorial integrity and sovereignty during a rare visit to the country. Xi's visit aims to strengthen diplomatic ties and solidify China's influence in Central Asia, a region historically under Russian influence. Beijing's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has raised concerns over debt traps, but Xi has promised to support Tajikistan's independence and resist external interference. #XiJinping #TajikistanVisit #TerritorialIntegrity #DiplomaticTies #CentralAsia #BeltAndRoadInitiative #ShanghaiCooperationOrganization Read more at... https://lnkd.in/dRM5sKxD

As global tensions continue to reshape alliances, Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Russia for the BRICS summit holds significant weight, particularly in light of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and the unresolved China-India border issues. The war in Ukraine has altered global geopolitical dynamics, and India’s position as a neutral player offers it a unique role in fostering dialogue. At the same time, the border tensions with China remain a sensitive issue that demands strategic diplomacy. This visit is not just about economic cooperation within BRICS but also about recalibrating relationships in a world where old alliances are being tested. Navigating these complexities will require India to balance its long-standing ties with Russia, assert its stance on sovereignty regarding China, and continue its advocacy for a peaceful resolution to conflicts, all while safeguarding its national interests. #india #brics #peace #modi

Authoritarian countries' negotiation tactics: 1) Demand the maximum; don't ask, but demand what is not yours. 2) Threaten; present ultimatums. 3) Do not give an inch in negotiations because someone will always be willing to give up. In the end, you may end up having something that was never yours. Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas provides clear insight on the topic, referring to the words of Soviet Union foreign minister Andrei Gromyko. The link is in the comments. As calls for diplomatic discussions are increasing, it is good to remind ourselves of these dynamics. Additionally, I would claim that not only Russia uses these tactics. For example, Turkey and Erdogan have been employing this formula with Greece for decades, aiming to challenge Greece's sovereignty and borders. The calculation is that if you demand something for decades, unrealistic and unfounded demands become border disputes with two different views... which then need to be mitigated, sometimes in the name of peace. In the end, the other side (Russia, Turkey) hopes to gain what was never theirs in the beginning. #Russia #Turkey #Greece #Estonia Panos Tasiopoulos Eleftheria Katsi Panagiotis Kakolyris Georgios (George) Dimakos Julian Bonnici Margherita Movarelli Pantelis Sklias Kristina Lazebna Kaja Kallas Estonian Embassy in Brussels Anna Rozniatowska-Fidos Anna Nalyvayko

Excellent analysis.
”The war in Ukraine may be a drain on the West’s resources and on the economies of developing countries, but it suits Beijing’s interests just fine. China has gained power over Russia, all while paying minimal economic and diplomatic penalties. China, then, may stay the course. It can continue to ridicule the West’s approach to the war and call for diplomacy without trying to achieve much in reality.”

Very true in deed. The war in Ukraine has been quite beneficial and profitable for China with minimum overhead on their part. There is little benefit in it for them for an early resolution or peace. The longer it drags out the better it is for China asa tool to drain Western attention and resources away from China's own ambitions and malign activities in the South China Sea and on its Western boarders. It also mean fewer voices in the West focussed on and calling attention to China's many internal human rights abuses against the Uyghurs and other minority groups within China. It also helps deflect attention away from China weak economy and major debt and lending crisis or its repressive and invassive national security law. Also the more Russia can normalize their occupation of Ukrainian territory, the better China's chances controlling blowback from the Global South and other nations over an invassion of Taiwan.

South Korea establishes a diplomatic relationship with Cuba. What foreign policy message could the current South Korean government (in an antagonistic relationship with North Korea) potentially signal from this diplomatic decision? "Today's South Korean foreign policy is motivated not by ideological hostility but by pragmatic security concerns. South Korea does not oppose communist states, but rather oppose rogue regimes like that of Kim Jung-un, which threaten the security of other countries". During the 2022 presidential election, Yoon expressed support for the ideological slogan "Annihilate Communism" as a candidate. But as Yoon's Government prepares for the upcoming South Korean National Assembly Election, it appears to advocate more "post-ideology" politics. Perhaps Yoon's government could then consider a similar message in its foreign policy. https://lnkd.in/epTPwfE9

Beijing is providing economic and infrastructural incentives to the Pacific island states for diplomatic recognition of the People’s Republic of China over Taiwan, and with development aid restricted by the United States to these states it would quite simply back China and create a win-win situation for itself. India and China, the two Asian giants, are cautiously navigating their complex relationship. Despite diplomatic talks and disengagement efforts, border tensions remain a key challenge. As EAM Jaishankar highlighted, 75% of disengagement is complete, but further de-escalation is critical. While cooperation is evident in multilateral forums like BRICS, China’s aggression on the LAC raises concerns about its true intentions.
