South Korea establishes a diplomatic relationship with Cuba. What foreign policy message could the current South Korean government (in an antagonistic relationship with North Korea) potentially signal from this diplomatic decision? "Today's South Korean foreign policy is motivated not by ideological hostility but by pragmatic security concerns. South Korea does not oppose communist states, but rather oppose rogue regimes like that of Kim Jung-un, which threaten the security of other countries". During the 2022 presidential election, Yoon expressed support for the ideological slogan "Annihilate Communism" as a candidate. But as Yoon's Government prepares for the upcoming South Korean National Assembly Election, it appears to advocate more "post-ideology" politics. Perhaps Yoon's government could then consider a similar message in its foreign policy. https://lnkd.in/epTPwfE9

Very true in deed. The war in Ukraine has been quite beneficial and profitable for China with minimum overhead on their part. There is little benefit in it for them for an early resolution or peace. The longer it drags out the better it is for China asa tool to drain Western attention and resources away from China's own ambitions and malign activities in the South China Sea and on its Western boarders. It also mean fewer voices in the West focussed on and calling attention to China's many internal human rights abuses against the Uyghurs and other minority groups within China. It also helps deflect attention away from China weak economy and major debt and lending crisis or its repressive and invassive national security law. Also the more Russia can normalize their occupation of Ukrainian territory, the better China's chances controlling blowback from the Global South and other nations over an invassion of Taiwan.
”The war in Ukraine may be a drain on the West’s resources and on the economies of developing countries, but it suits Beijing’s interests just fine. China has gained power over Russia, all while paying minimal economic and diplomatic penalties. China, then, may stay the course. It can continue to ridicule the West’s approach to the war and call for diplomacy without trying to achieve much in reality.”

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Cho Tae-yul, foreign minister of the Republic of Korea (ROK), in Beijing on Monday. "Recently, China-ROK relations have been facing difficulties and challenges, which is not in the common interests of both sides, nor is it what China wants to see," Wang said, adding that it is hoped that the ROK side will work with China to stick to the original intention of establishing diplomatic ties, adhere to the direction of good neighborliness and friendship, stick to the goal of mutually beneficial cooperation, remove disturbances, and make joint efforts to push for the sound and steady development of China-ROK relations.

This week #Cuba and #SouthKorea established diplomatic relations: Why wasn't it done before? Here is transcribed a short analyzes done recently by #Bloomberg South Korea's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the two countries representatives to the #UnitedNations exchanged diplomatic notes in New York on Wednesday to establish relations at the ambassadorial level. Cuba became the 193rd country to establish official relations with South Korea, he said. #Havana had been one of the few outliers worldwide when it came to forging ties with South Korea, differentiating itself from North Korea's two biggest sponsors: the Soviet Union and China, which established formal relations more than 30 years ago. years when the Cold War ended and they looked at South Korea as a powerful partner for trade. Cuba starts 2024 with one of its largest economic adjustment plans in decades. The announcement was kept secret to avoid any disruption by North Korea, the #Yonhap news agency reported, citing sources it did not name. Cuba saw the move as a way to expand trade with one of the world's largest economies, while South Korea saw the deal as helping to raise its global profile, Yonhap said, citing unspecified observers. North Korea's propaganda apparatus frequently praises what leader Kim Jong Un has called "precious traditions of friendship" with Havana and their work together to defend what he has called the "dignity" of their joint socialist cause. After North and South Korea reached an agreement that led to the two countries being jointly admitted to the United Nations in 1991, most member states were able to establish diplomatic relations with both sides. #Caribbean #LatinAmerica #LATAM https://lnkd.in/eu52NrWv
