I really enjoy being a lawyer. It's fun, interesting, and challenging. But can I also share for a moment how gratifying I find my volunteer work to be? I am volunteer college admissions coach with Scholarmatch, an education access non-profit. Each year they pair me with one or two "first gen" students from underserved high schools so that I can help the students shoot for admission to colleges that would be a good fit. We do all our work virtually, which is really convenient. You know how gratifying it is to do something 1:1 that helps kids navigate America's screwy higher ed system? It's awesome! This is such a positive way to pay it forward. Many underserved students "undermatch" for college, meaning that because of gaps in information & support, they may not explore colleges that could be great academic and financial fits for them. Volunteer coaches from all professions can help avoid this outcome. Scholarmatch really needs more volunteer college coaches. They provide good online training, and it's a very flexible commitment that yields tangible results & helps address inequities. This is really gratifying work -- please consider signing up! https://lnkd.in/gaC43nY6

I appreciate this piece elevating the multi-faceted work that #CommunitySchools do and the multiple sources of support that keep them going. Specifically, I appreciate this description of what community schools do—"a community school engages the entire school and its community in providing students the targeted support and resources they need to succeed in the classroom: from helping families navigate access to health care, mental health services, food, and the internet, to providing workforce training, literacy development, tutoring, and safe after-school programming." And, I appreciate how this piece highlights the interplay of nonprofit, federal, and state funding that has helped more students benefit from this evidence-based approach to education—including the federal Full-Service Community Schools grants.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to help spread the word about the good work happening in New Mexico's community schools. Read more in my guest column in today's Albuquerque Journal: https://lnkd.in/eq-ZEzev

Imagine… …if your dream students and families sought YOU out. If they saw your school as the answer to their questions; the solution to their challenges; the partner they could trust. Imagine if they believed in your value; understood your school’s personality; knew what it felt like to be part of your community. Now imagine if they did all of this before ever visiting your campus, or picking up the phone, or meeting with your admissions team. When you have a strong school story, it’s imaginable. Because it happens for schools every single day. Learn more about how to work with Cursive to make it real for your school. https://bit.ly/3Xg5CdO

A good way to explain the REV!! 🤗
What does REV do? We get asked this a lot. Simply put, REV links knowledge to practice. Need a bit more? We use aa method that helps area communities, providing immediate solutions to their biggest challenges. Don't have the human resources to get a much needed project addressed? We've got Eastern Oregon University instructors and their students wanting a real-world learning experience. We match the community leaders with the faculty and students, then the work gets underway! REV is part of a worldwide network - Educational Partnerships for Innovation in Communities-Network - which work to maximize the human capital of universities with local governments and communities to improve the quality of life and social wealth for all involved.

🎉 Exciting News from Chicago Public Schools! 🎉 Chicago, a longtime CASEL partner district just shared fantastic updates: 🌟 Record-high graduation rate of 84%! 💸 Over $2.2 billion in scholarship offers for the Class of 2023! 📚 Students in grades 3-8 are #1 among large urban districts for reading recovery since the pandemic and #3 for combined reading and math recovery. 📖 #Literacy rates for our youngest learners have quadrupled over the last school year! Research shows that students with stronger social and emotional skills are more likely to reach educational milestones (Durlak et al., 2023) and achieve academic outcomes (Cipriano et al., 2023). We're proud to partner with CPS in fostering #SEL and contributing to these remarkable achievements. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gemvQMNy #Education

“While the work of advancing educational equity is broad and varied, our experiences together share two key commonalities: First, these efforts are successful when they are supported by both youth and adults. Second, they are most successful when they are supported by the schools themselves, through resources, funding, time and access to opportunities.”- Powerful piece written by my UP youth and adult colleagues!

Not all charter schools are challenging the status quo, but I strongly believe in the power of those few charter schools implementing #personalizedlearning, #metacognitiveconstructivism, and promoting #studentled and #selfdirected mindsets. These are the models and mindsets that public schools are unable to engage in with fidelity due to political and economic pressure from all levels of the public education system - from state legislation to district finance policies to local school site councils, PTAs, and teachers' unions (all of which I wholly support! #PublicSchoolAdvocate). But innovation comes at a cost and change agents cannot implement systemic change alone. Funding for truly innovative charter schools is its own battle that folks like Peggy Downs has been successfully fighting for years. If you are seeking the funds to innovate in schools, be part of this conversation. Read below and reach out to join next month's meetup and expand your community of change agents. "Students and organizations that helped shape CSULB for the better" - an article that I wrote for the Long Beach Current's 75th Anniversary issue that celebrates CSULB's 75th birthday on Sept. 28th! The process of writing this article showed me a lot about the flow of a newsroom, the importance of teamwork, and how to make something out of what I thought was nothing. Learning experiences all around! https://lnkd.in/df5Y9Eye

Check out my latest article, which was published today! I had the honor of interviewing and featuring Guadalupe Lopez, President of ASDVC (Associated Students of DVC/Student Government). It was a pleasure to communicate Lopez's mission and share her story with the DVC community, letting students know how she advocates for them. You can read the full article on The Inquirer website! https://lnkd.in/gCJtFE_H
