Laying a DN 800 steel pipeline 11 km under water was perhaps a world first in the 1960s, although less than 10 years later more and more sea outfall pipes were being laid in PE. From the sound of the report, the necessary new installation due to corrosion will once again be carried out in steel (?). This would not be in keeping with the times from several points of view, because PE pressure pipes would not only be advantageous for reasons of corrosion. While most of our pipeline network around SA is underground, did you know there’s also around 11 kilometres underwater? In a world first, in terms of pipe size and technology, a stretch of the Morgan to Whyalla Pipeline crosses the Spencer Gulf between Mambray Creek on the eastern side and Douglas Point on the Eyre Peninsula. Laid in 1966, the 825 millimetre-diameter pipe sits in a backfilled 2.7 metre trench for protection. Recent surveys show it’s in excellent condition and will remain in service for many years.
