🔬 At STEMCELL, we often highlight the significance of cell quality. A recent publication from the Barbaric lab at the University of Sheffield sheds light on the mechanism of how a common 1q duplication in hPSCs affects cell differentiation. 🧬 The study reveals that these abnormal hPSCs become hypersensitive to WNT signaling, thereby altering differentiation and maturation phenotypes. Researchers identify therapies to limit COVID-19 risk in people with Down syndrome. Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology AIBN Senior Research Fellow Dr Mohammed Shaker and Phenomics Australia Scientific Director Professor Ernst Wolvetang, head of the In vitro Genome Engineering and Disease Modelling Service and organoid expert, worked with a team to develop a synthetic organoid that mirrors the brain of a person with Down syndrome, to explore why people born with the genetic condition are more vulnerable to the coronavirus. Researchers from UC San Diego have created an array of #nanopillars that can breach the #CellNucleus – the compartment that houses our #DNA – without damaging the #cell's outer membrane. This new “gateway into the nucleus” could open new possibilities in #GeneTherapy, where genetic material needs to be delivered directly into the nucleus, as well as drug delivery and other forms of #PrecisionMedicine. The nucleus is impenetrable by design.
