[SUCCESS🏆STORY] 2024 JEC Composites Innovation Awards winner in the category Aerospace Parts Kelly Matthews and Brendan Murray discuss their recent success in this competition. >> https://lnkd.in/ew2izPSk 📄 ATG Europe has developed a one-shot manufacturing process for uninterrupted prepreg fibre-placed lattice structures that aim to replace current satellite central tube designs. These cylindrical lattice structures offer optimal structural functionality at a reduced mass. This innovation included the design, development and manufacture of a fully representative CFRP lattice central tube based on requirements for ESA’s PLATO satellite, including all necessary interface zones. Thermoset pre-preg carbon fibre tows and patches were manually laid-up onto a mandrel, consolidated and cured in an autoclave in a single step to form one integral part. Pushing the Boundaries of Aerospace Engineering – Proud to be part of Project #NICOLLIER! 🚀 At SCHNEEBERGER Group, innovation and precision drive everything we do, and we’re thrilled to have contributed to the remarkable success of Project NICOLLIER! Led by ARIS and ETH Zürich, this group breaking initiative features a reusable rocket equipped with an autonomous, steerable parachute system for guided recovery—an incredible leap forward in advancing aerospace engineering. 🚀 Over the past year, the project team worked tirelessly through design, manufacturing, subsystem, and full-system testing to bring this vision to life. The results speak for themselves: ✨ Two successful launches with full recovery. ✨ A 1,000-meter horizontal flight with the rocket landing just 6.5 meters from the target! We are incredibly proud that our #MINISLIDE MSQ 15-90.70 played a vital role in enabling this innovation. The MSQ’s technical properties ensure flawless functionality in the parachute system, even with repeated use. Congratulations to the entire ARIS team on this incredible milestone! This semester, my group and I had the opportunity to independently design and execute an experiment analyzing rotorcraft blade material properties under tensile loading. By comparing pre-fractured blades made of aluminum and nylon carbon fiber, we explored stress and strain behavior critical to vertical flight operations. Using Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and advanced lab equipment, we verified phenomena central to rotorcraft safety and performance. Through this work, we confirmed the superior performance of aluminum under these conditions, providing valuable insights into material selection for high-stress aerospace applications. A big thanks to my incredible teammates, Jaffa Heryudono and Devi Patel, for their dedication and collaboration. This project was a testament to the importance of teamwork and hands-on learning in verifying theoretical principles. Key considerations include separating the rotor's rotational frequency from the bending modes (eigenfrequencies) to avoid resonance issues and managing the ratio of moments of inertia in different axis to prevent controller instabilities. Proper analysis with FEM models and control system simulations is essential for optimizing these parameters and ensuring reliable rotor operation. In Part 2 of this chapter, we are going to dive deeper into the operation of a magnetic bearing motor chopping an infrared beam.
