Thank you Cathy Draper for this afternoon's ARC webinar showcasing Walsall's Building Resilient and Inclusive Communities and Schools (BRICS) programme. BRICS demonstrates the power of collaboration, having successfully united all the Walsall maintained Primary Schools behind a vision of trauma-informed and attachment aware practice. In the first year of BRICS, there were 31 referrals for children at risk of exclusion, but with the support of the BRICS programme, only one of these children was excluded from their Primary School. At Short Heath Foundation, where Cathy is Executive Headteacher, there have been no suspensions or exclusions since they changed their culture over six years ago. "It's not easy, you make mistakes and learn as you go, but the approach is a game changer for our children". The BRICS webinar, and all others in the ARC Learning Programme, will be available to ARC members on the online platform. Visit our website to see our future events or find out more about membership. www.the-arc.org.uk

The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has developed a resource to support early childhood self-regulation and cognitive development. It recommends that educators help children manage their thoughts, actions, and emotions by creating challenges, teaching self-monitoring, fostering collaborative learning, and promoting physical activity. The Evidence Store details specific strategies for early years education, such as summarising children's progress towards a common goal during group play to enhance collaboration skills, and encouraging "Imagine if..." scenarios to extend and challenge their thinking. https://lnkd.in/eWgDm49Z

Despite the benefits of integrated settings, most early childhood education programs are remarkably segregated. On June 18, join Learning Policy Institute, The Century Foundation, New America, Southern Education Foundation for a webinar that will illuminate the important but often overlooked problem of segregation in ECE settings. Speakers will share strategies that policymakers and administrators can use to foster integration, as well as examples of cities and states putting these strategies into action. https://bit.ly/3UMU5ji

Check this out: In EVERY SINGLE CITY that significantly expanded public charter schools over the past decade, ALL low-income kids (including those in district-run schools!) leapt toward state averages. The other cities? Not so much. No place should be hanging up a "mission accomplished" banner yet, but the evidence continues to mount: When you expand public school options (think: Montessori, magnet, charter, language-immersion, etc.) more kids get access to the best-fit schools that meet their needs and unlock their potential. Part 2: ECE's Need to Respond to Children's Developmental Needs I wanted to follow up my last post by saying that I believe in private childcare for a number of reasons. For one, it gives educators an opportunity to use specialized curriculum such as Montessori, Reggio Emilia, or Creative Curriculum. I have friends who run NAEYC accredited schools that have invested in and use these curricula successfully and the children benefit in so many ways. They tell me it is not enough. The children need more to cope with the challenges in their lives. Teachers need more to meet the children's developmental needs. What state funding is available is often poorly distributed, usually in the form of school equipment or learning materials. Or repeat training on run-of-the mill state guidelines and general child development practices. This type of clock-hour training is different from being steeped within a program that offers in-depth learning with practicum experience in the classroom with the children. Quality can only come from the latter and it is what our children deserve. I know I have only stated problems and not solutions. I struggle with different ideas myself and at times feel quite helpless. If there is a conversation I can join beyond NAEYC's Power to the Profession (https://lnkd.in/gm2Y6VwV) I am certainly open to it. I want to end by saying I am proud to work within a private preschool system myself that hires social workers and inclusion specialists to work with individual schools for an added layer of support. More is needed at the in-school level, but it is an important part of the equation and at least Bezos Academy is thinking of supportive, inclusive solutions. ❤️

Are you a Senior Special Education Leader in a district or community school in Ohio? The 2024 needs assessment was designed in collaboration with Ohio’s professional educator associations, including OAPSA, and members of the OEC Guiding Coalition. It asks you about your view of issues statewide, the urgent challenges in your district/community school, your current views of the support you are receiving, and the kinds of support you need and prefer. For the findings to be useful—for your district/community school and for OEC support to your district/community school—we need everyone who is invited to complete the needs assessment. So, please take this wonderful opportunity to provide input. Here's the link with more details and a link to the assessment. https://lnkd.in/ePHfED9d * The 2024 needs assessment was designed in collaboration with Ohio’s professional educator associations and members of the OEC Guiding Coalition. Good communication skills strengthen a child’s ability to learn and help them manage their emotions and behaviour. However, under-served children often arrive at school with lower speech and language ability causing them to fall behind, which can have a long-lasting impact on learning. We recently published our impact report which explores the difference that our Language for Life programme is having on young children in early years setting in our community. https://hubs.li/Q02trjdl0
