October is Black History Month [https://bbc.in/3TTiofS], a time to reflect on what people of colour had to go through (and are still going through) to have a place in society and business. It made me think back to when I was running Micro-aggression Awareness workshops in a big corporate - a humbling and eye-opening experience. One colleague, a person of colour in a very senior role, shared that they were going to a new client’s office for an important meeting. My colleague was early, and was let into the meeting room alone. Shortly after, the clients entered the room too. They looked at my colleague and said: “Ah great, you’re here: can you get us four coffees, two teas and some water please?” They thought my colleague was the catering staff, not the senior director they were meeting. To any person of colour - or other minority, or woman - this won’t sound surprising. Even in 2024, this type of experience is still their everyday reality, whether in their professional or personal lives. It doesn’t even register anymore. So what can we do? Many organisations have made big steps in having a more diverse workforce - it’s proven, after all, to make a real difference to their bottom lines [https://bit.ly/8reasonsDEI]. But that’s just one step in the journey. You can have the most diverse team, but if you don’t include them, you’re not benefitting from their kaleidoscope of backgrounds, experiences and unique viewpoints. Inclusion means giving all your people an equal share of voice, to actively listen and to give everyone the same chance to contribute. Because their voices are still not heard enough. And you don’t want to send them away to get coffees, when they could change your business for the better. ***** Thank you for reading this article by Diverse Communications Consulting. Don't miss our other article on hybrid work [https://bit.ly/47ZdSlS]. Want to know more about what we do? Fear is one of our oldest instincts — both a motivator and a manipulator. Too often, it influences how DEI is approached, leading to decisions made to avoid public backlash rather than to drive meaningful progress. Actions are taken for external appearances, while internal impacts on culture, trust, and long-term growth are often left unaddressed. When decision-makers continually look to the same limited talent pools, it’s no surprise that historically overlooked groups get left behind. Redefining the future of work means committing to broader pathways that welcome diverse talent and enable real equity in opportunity. As leaders like Ken Frazier remind us, diversity strategies are crucial in a country where not everyone starts from the same place. DEI is about fairness, leveling the playing field, and, simply, doing what’s right. The more we can build DEI into the fabric of our organizations — not as a side initiative but as a core value — the stronger and more resilient our workplaces become. Leaders like Frazier and Kenneth I. Chenault make a powerful case for why DEI must be foundational. Let’s move beyond reactive measures and toward creating workplaces where every individual has an equal shot at success. Both Frazier and Chenault shared great insight on this topic recently with Black Enterprise Magazine https://bit.ly/3UwPdiV #Diversity #Equity #Inclusion #WorkplaceInclusion #FutureOfWork

Every woman should be free to climb the career ladder, yet biases hinder Black women from reaching senior leadership roles. Systemic racism, like poisoned water, affects opportunities, limiting Black women's upward progression. At WRC, we envision a world where Black women flourish, unencumbered by prejudice, leading with grace and power. It may not seem intuitive but I'd encourage my fellow marketers to register for this panel. Why would a marketer care about Supplier Diversity? - Research shows that customers want to support brands that stand for something. Prioritizing supplier diversity shows that your brand values inclusivity, fairness, and community impact. It's not just good ethics; it's good business. - Diverse suppliers bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions. They help us think outside the box and develop products and campaigns that resonate with a broader audience. A diverse supply chain can be a catalyst for creativity and differentiation. - Understanding and reflecting the diversity of the market is key to effective marketing. Working with diverse suppliers ensures our products and messaging are culturally relevant, helping us connect authentically with our customers. - Many large organizations and government entities require supplier diversity in their contracts. By supporting these initiatives, we not only meet compliance requirements but also open the door to new partnerships and business opportunities. If learning about a strategic advantage that drives innovation, strengthens our brand, and helps us build lasting relationships with our customers isn't enough, you should do it because the women on this panel are amazing leaders and you're guaranteed to learn something.

In honor of Black Business Month, I'm thrilled to be speaking on the "Supplier Diversity: Innovation, Inclusion & Insights" panel, alongside amazing industry leaders: Janelle James of Ipsos, Faith Airhiavbere of Microsoft Digital, Kamala Avila-Salmon of Lionsgate, Dawn Carr of Mahoghany Insights, and Shay Mustafa of Reynolds American Inc. 🌟 As many Fortune 500 companies have committed billions to supplier diversity, the challenge lies in turning those commitments into impactful actions. Supplier diversity is crucial for supporting women, minority, and veteran-owned businesses, ensuring business health, access to new markets, and enhanced brand reputation. We’ll be discussing what’s working and what isn’t in supplier diversity today, including topics such as procurement strategy, communications, socially sustainable supply chains, alignment with corporate goals, reporting, branding, and relationship-building. I look forward to a great discussion and sharing valuable insights with you all!
