Onboarding should be personalized to each new hire. Yes, standard onboarding practices about company-wide items and information are highly important. However, each person onboards differently. Before a human starts, ask them about how they want their onboarding experience to look. Some humans prefer to wait until day 1, others want info ahead of time. Some onboard best by reading, while others prefer short videos. Some humans want to shadow before they dive in, while others prefer to test and learn as they go. There should be a clear plan with milestones for the first 30-60-90 days that are agreed upon. However, the ways in which those milestones are achieved should be a collaborative decision-making process with the new hire. Ask questions. Bring them in.
