Nearly two years after GenAI's introduction, opinions remain polarised. Either you are down with it, either you don’t. There’s little room for middle-ground perspectives it seems. But regardless of divisions, it would be unwise for companies to overlook educating their white-collar workforce about AI. The key reason lies in the mindset of Generation Z. Unlike previous generations, most Gen Z'ers don't live to work. They seek companies that align with their values and support a balanced life. At 44, I've seen many of my peers, including myself, burn out after years of prioritizing work above life. Gen Z is different. They see AI as a tool to free up time for life beyond work. For them, adapting to AI is about being intentional with the time it frees up, not just increasing productivity. So modern companies should be thinking about how to use the extra time, rather than pushing for more work. Companies that adopt this mentality will be better positioned to attract and retain Gen Z talent. This shift can be difficult for Generation X to grasp, but being the father of three Gen Z'ers provides a steep learning curve, I can assure you. Our technological future isn't about speed—it's about being humane In the ever-evolving landscape of technological innovation, artificial intelligence represents a deeply personal odyssey that defies simple categorization. Much like the nuanced journey of parenting, understanding AI's potential is less about universal solutions and more about individual exploration and emotional readiness. Imagine AI as a mirror reflecting our unique technological aspirations, fears, and dreams. Each person approaches this transformative technology with a distinct emotional and intellectual fingerprint, shaped by their experiences, industry, and personal comfort with change. Ask anyone about their experiments with AI and their responses will reveal layers of personal narrative: excitement, hesitation, curiosity, and sometimes profound uncertainty. While some individuals confidently can name three AI applications in their industry, others struggle to articulate even one. But this isn't about judgment—it's about recognizing that technological literacy is a journey, not a destination. Just as in parenting, where supporting a child's growth requires understanding their unique emotional terrain, AI adoption demands a similar empathetic approach. Our relationship with AI is deeply emotional and personal. It is after all trained on the very linguistic code that put us on top of the evolutionary pyramid. While some of my clients approach AI with unbridled excitement, viewing it as a transformative force, others navigate with cautious curiosity, like parents learning to support without controlling. And some remain skeptical, their hesitation a valid response to rapid technological change. Any change management effort to increase the pace of adoption of AI must be seen as a compassionate exploration of individual technological journeys. It's about understanding individual comfort zones, learning styles, and growth potential. It is a reminder that technological adoption is deeply personal, requiring: Unconditional support for individual learning paths Creating safe spaces for exploration and potential failure Celebrating effort over perfection Recognizing that each person's AI journey is unique As we stand at the crossroads of technological transformation, the key isn't standardization but personalization. Organizations and individuals must approach AI with the same nuanced understanding a supportive parent brings to their child's personal growth. We must ask: How can we create technological environments that nurture individual potential? How do we support each person's unique path of technological discovery? The real high-value use cases for AI won't emerge from universal mandates but from deeply personal, emotionally intelligent explorations.
