Need to slope a column in your next design? Sloped columns are helpful when changing a grid pattern for a mixed use building or sometimes to give some extra aesthetic dimension to a design. Sloped columns produce additional horizontal forces at the top and bottom of the slope that need to be transferred to the lateral force resisting system through the diaphragms. Typically, column slopes up to 6 units vertical: 1 unit horizontal can be accommodated without a lot of additional analysis and can avoid the need for heavier, deeper transfer beams.
