🌏 Aotearoa New Zealand’s recent earthquake experiences and engineering expertise are drawcards for researchers and students living in other seismically active countries. 👩🎓 Ensuring the younger generation gets relevant experience is one way to improve how society lives with earthquakes. An earthquake study tour was held in Aotearoa New Zealand in April 2023 for American graduate students and university staff members as part of the US-funded program PREEMPTIVE (Pacific Rim Earthquake Engineering Mitigation Protective Technologies International Virtual Environment). Let's meet graduate student researcher Emily Fedders of our Snow, Ice and Permafrost Group. Emily has been diving into sea ice. Not literally, of course. "I study sea ice in the Arctic Ocean or, more specifically, sea ice mechanics and dynamics at intermediate scales, between about 10 meters and 10 kilometers. I find this interesting both because I think of this as a scale that relates well to human interactions with the ice for travel, subsistence or industry, as well as because it's a scale that requires a creative combination of fieldwork and remote sensing to observe thoroughly." Continental-scale strike-slip faults have a prominent effect on the development of the orogenic plateaus in the collisional zones. The northern margin of the Iranian Plateau developed in the Arabia-Eurasia collision zone has generally been controlled by major strike-slip faults. Kushk-e-Nosrat Fault, as one of the plateau bounding faults has experienced complex spatial and temporal evolution. In our recent paper published in TECTONICS: “Time Constraints on the Late Cenozoic Fault Evolution Along the Northern Margin of the Iranian Plateau in the Arabia‐Eurasia Collision Zone” the integration of structural, stratigraphic, morphological, low-temperature thermochronometry and thermal modeling approaches have been used to unravel this complex pattern of evolution. For the first time, NSF-funded researchers revealed a detailed look at the potential for a major earthquake off the coasts of southern British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and northern California. The new study characterizes the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which includes the "megathrust" fault, where the largest earthquakes initiate and spread, to inform potential earthquake and tsunami hazards. China has activated the world’s most advanced hypergravity machine, the Centrifugal Hypergravity and Interdisciplinary Experiment Facility (CHIEF), located in Hangzhou. This groundbreaking facility can produce forces up to 1,900 times stronger than Earth's gravity, revolutionizing research in extreme conditions. 🏆 Meet our Li Ka Shing Prize awardee, Mr Longhui Yuan🏆 Mr Yuan’s dissertation studied the origin and evolution of the GJ 1148 extrasolar planetary system, which is a rare system of a low-mass star with a pair of gas giant planets.  He found that the spin rate of the planet is not significantly altered by the eccentricity variations. By systematically studying the influence of the ratio of the secular timescale and the spin-down timescale, he found the inner planet’s rotation rate can vary significantly when the two timescales are comparable.  The findings have important implications for the evolution of the so-called warm Jupiters under the scenario of in-situ scattering.  Mr Yuan is now a PhD student at ETH Zurich in Switzerland, where he is studying the origin of magnetic fields on Earth and other planets.  Watch the video and learn more about Mr Cheung’s research! #HKU #HKUrpg #HKUgradsch #PhD #MPhil #awards #research #postgraduate #researchpostgraduate #scholarship

Australian Earth Science Education’s Kalgoorlie Outreach Program, proudly funded by Minerals Research Institute of Western Australia (MRIWA), is making a significant impact on regional education. AusEarthEd’s recent visit to Kalgoorlie brought engaging Earth Science incursions to local secondary schools, including John Paul College, Eastern Goldfields Education Support Centre, Kalgoorlie-Boulder Community High School, and Fairbridge College. These sessions sparked curiosity and enthusiasm among students, showcasing the importance and excitement of Earth Science in our everyday lives. In addition, AusEarthEd collaborated with the Science team at Eastern Goldfields College, laying the groundwork for the ATAR Year 11 Earth and Environmental Science course set to launch in 2025. This collaboration not only supports teachers but also helps prepare students for future opportunities in STEM.
