In the US, even the least popular architecture programs are hundreds of times better than the best programs of the late 19th century. During the second half of the 19th century, Henry Van Brunt wrote about the general experience of studying and practicing architecture. He stated, 'The study of architecture at that time was pursued under the most discouraging conditions. The art was ill-understood and hardly respected by the public.' Van Brunt continued, 'There were few books available, and our traditions were eminently provincial. Examples of good work were so rare that our ideals of perfection were incoherent.' Today, we live in an era where knowledge is abundant and easily accessible. Renowned architects like William Robert Ware, Richard Morris Hunt, and Henry Van Brunt would be astounded by the wealth of information we have at our fingertips. This access empowers us to study and advance the field of architecture in ways they could only dream of. The challenges of the past remind us to appreciate the resources and tools we have today. As we continue to build and innovate, let's remember the foundations laid by our predecessors and use our advantages to push the boundaries of what architecture can achieve. MoMA Acquires Work of UNM Chair of Architecture Chris Cornelius The Museum of Modern Art recently acquired the work of Chris Cornelius, University of New Mexico Professor of Architecture. This acquisition into the Architecture and Design permanent collection is internationally recognized as highly prestigious. MoMA’s acquisition includes three drawings from his Radio Free Alcatraz project (2014) and one model (2009) titled “Bear,” from a series of models called “Bending Out of Course.” You can view the collected work here. This work is featured in the exhibition Down to Earth opening on November 22, 2024. It will demonstrate “how the design of the built environment can help foster resilient communities, mitigate the devastating impacts of the climate crisis, and re-establish connections between human and nonhuman life.” Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning, Robert González stated of this recognition, “As the first Indigenous person trained as an architect to be in the Architecture and Design collection, Chris Cornelius is a central voice of a new generation of designers in the built environment disciplines who are helping us to reframe our relationship with the land through an Indigenous lens. We’re fortunate to have Cornelius at the helm of our Architecture program in a region poised to lead in this timely reframing.”

My book "Architectural Drawings as Investigating Devices" explores how the changing modes of representation in architecture and urbanism relate to the transformation of how the addressees of architecture and urbanism are conceived. The book diagnoses the dominant epistemological debates in architecture and urbanism during the 20th and 21st centuries. It traces their transformations, paying special attention to Le Corbusier and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s preference for perspective representation, to the diagrams of Team 10 architects, to the critiques of functionalism, and the upgrade of the artefactual value of architectural drawings in Aldo Rossi, John Hejduk, Peter Eisenman, and Oswald Mathias Ungers, and, finally, to the reinvention of architectural programme through the event in Bernard Tschumi and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). Particular emphasis is placed on the spirit of truth and clarity in modernist architecture, the relationship between the individual and the community in post-war era architecture, the decodification of design process as syntactic analogy and the paradigm of autonomy in the 1970s and 1980s architecture, the concern about the dynamic character of urban conditions and the potentialities hidden in architectural programme in the post-autonomy era.
