Data from S&P Global Commodity Insights shows "bio-bunker" fuel prices are approximately 40% higher than #crude oil-based products. There is limited evidence, at least so far, that retailers, #manufacturers and other shippers are willing to pay higher-than-market prices to #ship goods using alternative fuels, except for a few pioneers. ❓ What impact do spot markets have on shipping’s ability to decarbonize? The shipping industry is intrinsically tied to the function and fluctuation of the global market. In uncertain times, seaborne trade fulfils a vital role in bolstering the resilience of supply chains and the trade of essential commodities. How can cargo carriers reduce their fleet’s GHG emissions, while maintaining their agility and ability to reshape commodity trade flows? 💡 Read our position paper on decarbonization trajectories to explore the measures available: https://lnkd.in/eexGH3_P #ShapingaBetterMaritimeWorld #ShippingDecarbonization

The true cost of the goods and services that shipping delivers - that is, including a minimum price for carbon - has yet to materialise. Pretending it's not coming is not a solution. This is a well-reasoned piece and timely piece from Lloyd's List; it takes hubris to book Kylie for your Posidonia party rather than spending the money on green #methanol for example. The question we really should be asking is, what happens if the industry simply fails to comply? What - apart from approbation and hand-wringing - will be the penalty? We know what the consequences will be - we're experiencing those already. #shipping #maritime #carbon #decarbonisation #supplychain #futurefuels

🚢 Are you ready for Fuel EU Maritime? This regulation is set to reshape the shipping industry, targeting a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Key points: ⦿Applies to commercial ships above 5,000 gross tons at EU ports. ⦿Introduces Greenhouse Gas Intensity (GHGI) to measure emissions per energy unit. ⦿Non-compliance leads to financial penalties, increasing over time. Compliance options: pay penalties, use greener fuels, or manage emissions by pooling, banking or borrowing allowances. At ZeroNorth, we’re taking action to support our customers with: ➡️ Upgraded platform for biofuel and fuel blending reporting, including proof of sustainability documentation. ➡️ GHGI performance insights and compliance simulations to explore various options. A comparison of the prices for Asia-to-Europe #container shipping and EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) permits shows the complexity facing #SupplyChain operators. The ETS price is a function of the power-generating industry due to its share of issued ETS permits, making hedging a complex exercise for logistics firms including #shipping companies. Decarbonise Shipping by 15-30% by 2050. Or by 30-50% now? The global shipping industry carries 80% to 90% of global trade according to @BCG and is only in the initial stages of taking meaningful action to decarbonise. Under the right conditions, it says, biogas-pathway fuels have the potential to decarbonise up to 15%-30% of global shipping by 2050. In the 15 years plus in the interim, commercial shipping operators could reduce their oil use by 30-50% immediately, by installing Tan Delta technology. #ESG #TanDeltaSystems #MarineEngine

🌊 In the news: International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a target of a 20% reduction in total GHG emissions by 2030, striving for 30%; but there are doubts from some that the industry can meet this ambition. 🎤 Speaking at media briefing in Singapore on 19 April IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez expressed confidence that shipping would hit the 2030 target, the first of two checkpoints leading to an ambition of net zero emissions at or around 2050. Earlier in the week S&P Global Commodity Insights’ Rahul Kapoor, Vice President, Global Head of Shipping Analytics & Research, cast doubt on the ability of the industry to meet the 2030 target based on alternative fuels availability. 📰 Read more about this story on Seatrade Maritime News: https://lnkd.in/eK2inC3J #CMAShipping #Maritime #Sustainability #Decarbonisation

Charting the Course: Transforming Global Shipping for Sustainability 🌊✨ With 90% of goods transported by sea, the shipping industry is pivotal in global trade. Despite a $1.5 trillion dip in 2023, trade is projected to rebound in 2024. Supply chains decentralize, driven by the 'China Plus One' strategy amid geopolitical shifts. Environmental consciousness fuels IMO's emissions reduction strategy, while LNG and methanol gain traction, comprising 40% of new orders. Embracing trends like telemetry and renewable energy, we navigate towards a greener, more resilient future. #ShippingIndustry #Sustainability #GlobalTrade #SupplyChain #Logistics #Maritime #EnvironmentalSustainability #GreenShipping #AlternativeFuels #CarbonEmissions #TelemetryOnShips #LNGShipping #RenewableEnergy #WindPower #SolarPower #ShippingTrends #Decentralization #ChinaPlusOne #USChinaTradeWar #GeopoliticalTensions #FutureOfShipping #imarcgroup #researchanalytics #greatplacetowork #bestworkplacesforwomen
