The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is joining forces with key stakeholders to modernize UK airspace up to 2040. Collaborating with ACOG, the Ministry of Defence, and NERL, this initiative aims to pave the way for new technologies in the aerospace industry. CEO Rob Bishton highlights the importance of this long-term effort, emphasizing the need for industry-wide cooperation and a shared vision for a modernized airspace. The delivery plan outlines strategic priorities and invites industry engagement towards this transformative goal. Aviation Minister Mike Kane underscores the benefits of this initiative, including reduceing delays, support for projects assisting decarbonisation , and noise reduction. The plan not only addresses current challenges but also sets the stage for the safe integration of innovative solutions into the UK skies. The question is will changes come at a speed that matches the speed of changes in the technology . As technology evolves, the call for airspace modernization becomes more pressing . For those involved regulation changes need to align with the tech in order for tbe UK to fully unlock the potential. #drones #uk #caa #regulation

A new step forward for #Eurodrone programme: the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) has been successfully performed. This PDR proves that the initial design of the aircraft has consistently matured, paving the way to proceed with the detailed design. For example, the Wind Tunnel Testing has been one of the evaluations performed by the Eurodrone team to confirm the aerodynamic. This milestone shows a real joint effort and collaborative spirit from all industrial partners and the Customer community to ensure European sovereignty and independence in this critical segment of unmanned long endurance ISTAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance) capability. Led by Airbus Defence and Space as prime contractor, this major programme milestone has been completed with OCCAR and representatives of the four customer nations (France, Germany, Italy and Spain) in the presence of the three Major Sub-Contractors (MSC), Airbus Defence and Space Spain, Dassault Aviation and Leonardo. Eurodrone is a key European defence programme: it will be the first natively designed and will guarantee the sovereignty and independence in the management of information and intelligence. Eurodrone will be provided with innovative cutting-edge technology and designed to become one of the main pillars of any future combat air system. #DefenceMatters #Europe #Eurodrone https://lnkd.in/eZmBXgpv

Here’s a recap of the other relevant news for #militaryaviation (“news”, so to speak, I haven’t been posting for a month and a half): 🔥 Venus Aerospace has announced the successful first long-duration engine test of their #RotatingDetonationRocketEngine (RDRE) in partnership with DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). The test flight was carried out with an Aero L-29 Delfín plane, reaching an altitude of 12,000 ft (3658 m), flying 10 miles (16 km) at Mach 0.9. Venus has been awarded contracts by several U.S. Government agencies to accelerate the development and potential transition of its RDRE technology for hypersonic and space missions. 🔥Hermeus unveiled its new high-speed, jet-powered Quarterhorse Mk 1. The uncrewed aircraft will soar the sky during flight tests at Edwards Air Force base scheduled later this year, focused on high-speed take off and landings. The next short-term step is represented by the #supersonic Mk 2, the next iteration planned to roll out in 2025 and meant to be “the world’s first purpose-built high-Mach drone”. 🔥JetZero announced that its beautiful #blendedwing demonstrator has been FAA-approved to begin test flights. Its concept claims to achieve 50% less fuel consumption than a standard jet, thanks to a greater lift surface. The company plans to build a prototype for the Air Force by 2027 and get its blended wing airliner into service by 2030. 🔥There are some tensions between Airbus Defence & Space and Dassault Aviation about the development of the #Eurodrone. A preliminary design review (PDR) was delayed due to coordination issues between the partners and it’s unclear if this will impact the critical design review (CDR) milestone expected for September 2024. A maiden sortie is still expected in January 2027, with a first aircraft and ground control station to be delivered to Germany in 2030.

Did you know that when a helicopter lands on a soft surface such as snow or sand, it creates a large cloud? This creates visibility problems for the pilot while trying to land safely. Innovators at our Aerospace Research Centre have developed a solution that uses autonomous flight systems to allow helicopters to land on their own. This allows for a much safer landing and reduces the number of people needed to operate the helicopter! If this landed your attention, learn more: https://ow.ly/YkXh50RJN91 #CIW24 #InnovateWhereYouAre Defence Research and Development Canada | Recherche et développement pour la défense Canada
