The quest for longevity has gained momentum, with drugs like metformin, acarbose, and rapamycin capturing attention for their potential anti-aging effects. 🧬 Metformin, commonly prescribed for diabetes, shows promise in reducing age-related diseases. Acarbose, an anti-diabetic, might lower risk factors for age-related conditions. Rapamycin, an immunosuppressant, has demonstrated lifespan extension in animal studies. 🐭 Ongoing research seeks to uncover how these drugs can enhance human longevity, potentially transforming how we age. Staying informed on these advancements could be key to a longer, healthier life #longevityfacts #longevity #lifespan #healthspan

Controlled Cells VS Darier Cells 🧬 "In Darier disease, the adhesions which link our skin cells weaken and split, compromising the ability of our epidermis to form a protective barrier. This is apparent, even in cells observed in culture dishes. Here, in control cells, the proteins involved in binding neighboring cells together (red) are highly concentrated at cell borders and connect directly to the tough, keratin "skeleton" inside the cells, ensuring that cells do not rip apart from each other when mechanically stressed. In cultured Darier disease cells, the adhesive proteins are lost from cell borders and the keratin inside of cells pulls away from the cell edge, meaning that neighboring cells are easily torn from each other." - Robert M Harmon from Northwestern. Today is Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) Awareness Day 📆 On Sunday I was invited to speak at PSC Support Australia’s ‘By Your Side’ forum. Afterwards, I got to hear from 5 Australian patients with PSC talk about their lived experience, and what struck me the most was the strength they all have dealing with this disease, which has so many unknowns. No known cure. No medical treatments which prevent progression. We don’t even know what causes it. Because it is uncommon, PSC is often overlooked - in diagnosis, and for funding. PSC is associated with significant morbidity and mortality, and its incidence is rising. It is critically important we invest in exploring the pathogenesis and treatment options for this orphan disease, now. See below a talk I gave in February for our PSC Patient Forum about why the gut microbiome is a novel therapeutic target in the treatment of PSC. https://lnkd.in/g7E6w5sn
Manipulation of the gut microbiome as therapy for PSC (Dr. Damjana Bogatic)
