Exciting to have the first issue underway! 🎉 The article exemplifies exactly what BioShorts is trying to achieve: short, peer-reviewed, open access manuscripts, adapted from smaller biological projects (undergraduate dissertations, master's theses, etc.), authored by an early-career researcher. The transformation for this article, from undergraduate dissertation to polished manuscript, was overseen by our lead editor through collaborative rewriting and editing. By offering both this service and our journal as a platform, we are able to provide a more attainable path to publication for early-career researchers and allow the interesting science investigated in these smaller projects to be shared with the wider scientific community! Our first issue, stretching to the end of 2024, is fully booked, so expect more releases in this space! Thinking ahead to Issue 2, I invite my network to reach out if you're an early-career researcher, you recently conducted a primary research project (undergraduate dissertation, master's dissertation, etc.), and would be interested in achieving publication. I would be happy to direct you to our lead editor for consultation. Oh, and did I mention this entire process is free of charge!
Issue 1 is underway! An interesting piece investigating microplastic fibre abundance in fish species from the Swansea Bay marine ecosystem. Check out the full article at our website: www.bioshorts.co.uk Boblin, E. Microplastic fibres in juvenile European Plaice (Pleuronectes platessa) and Whiting (Merlangius merlangus) from Swansea Bay. BioShorts 1:1, 2-5 (2024). DOI: 10.70145/BiSh0002 Peer-reviewed, open-access & free to publish!

Part 2 of Botanic Gardens of Sydney's What the Flora!? video is out, so now is the perfect time to watch both parts and see the whole story of how these marvellous native cycads are being saved from extinction. 😢🌴 Meet the loneliest plant in the world... 🔎 So that more cycads don't end up like Encephalartos woodii, a team of experts went on a mission to track down rare Australian species. Find out if they were successful when you watch the full What the Flora!? episode out tomorrow! 🔔 Subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/3JtBtja

The numbers are clear! Together we can make big shifts in how we look after nature. Where do you sit on this graph? At what level do you act for nature? The bars in the graph have the shape of a stairway which seems to represent the 'ease' of that level of action. Have you considered what could happen if we all take the next step?? #nature #conservation #biodiversity #climate #positivechange
What are your ideas for the best actions to take in your garden to help nature? Let's also include nature strips (Gayle Dallaston, I think you will have excellent suggestions!). People love nature (and their yards) and managing their pets and gardens for nature is one of the top ways that people say they act for nature, according to our new national research conducted with Monash University.
