5 problems everyone has with WordPress: 1) You can't find where to update something The original website creator band-aided "solutions" and didn't take the time to document updates. solution: create and regularly update technical documentation in a theme readme.md file. 2) You have multiple plugins doing the same thing Different web designers have different preferences, add their preferred plugins, but never phase out the previous plugins. solution: document purpose of plugin and every place it's being used on the website. 3) All your website updates keep getting erased WordPress is an open source, free platform, and its code constantly needs to be updated in order to maintain security for all users. How do you make website updates without them being erased every time you have to update the theme? solution: -- option 1: create a child theme to will hold all your customizations -- option 2: use code snippet plugin to store code changes in the database 4) Your website looks fine for you but not your customer As an administrator, you have an admin view of the website, which excludes caching capabilities, and includes extra scripts/stylesheets being loaded. solution: in order to see what your client is really seeing, open an incognito window and load your site, and see if you are able to reproduce the issue then. 5) You tried to update something small, and then the whole website crashed There are many reasons why this could happen, but there is a common issue. An admin tries to update something on a slow internet connection and the save is interrupted. Half of the data is only saved or is corrupted, causing the site to crash and display a fatal error. solution: when making any updates to a website, make sure you are on a decent internet connection so your saves don't get interrupted. ----- Which of these problems do you typically encounter? I don't do it very often any more, but every now and then I (aka Perfidious Albert) get asked to do a simple static non e-commerce website. I am working on this one for a movie producer at the moment. It is nice to write plain old HTML and CSS. HTML websites are also lighting fast to load, excellent for SEO, and good for the planet as there is no server side processing and no databases chewing up electricity in a big data centre. They are also virtually hacker proof. I used to use WordPress or some other CMS but they are complete overkill for 90% of websites. The only reason to use WordPress is to get past the sales objection of "I want to be able to update it myself". No you don't. Trust me. WordPress is cack and horrible to use and you will end up paying some idiot €60 every time just to swap out a photo. It is also slow, messy, insecure, expensive, and ugly. My way of handling this objection is that I promise free updates indefinitely. I am sitting at my desk most days anyway. It takes me two minutes to swap out an image or change some text. Then two clicks to FTP it up to the server agus sin é. Happens maybe twice a year on most websites. Try offering a business owner the choice between remembering their WordPress login every 6 months or a quick email to their friendly pleb every 6 months. Just make sure your hands are in your pocket when you do as mine are covered in bite marks.
