Often, the best projects we get involved in are through serendipity. I started teaching Engineering Design at UCT in 2015. Soon, I was interacting with the D-School on how to fuse System Engineering (which teaches us "how" to design it right) with Design Thinking (which helps us to find the "right" thing to design). Since then we have been experimenting with pedagogy to train our students with both these skills. The following post summarises this journey so elegantly. #DesignThinking #SystemEngineering #Engineering #UCT #Design #Innovation #Pedagogy https://lnkd.in/gU_awb-K

Proud to Announce the Launch of the Engineering Society at the University of Sunderland! 🤖 I’m incredibly excited to share that we have officially founded the Engineering Society at the University of Sunderland! This society is a platform for innovation, collaboration, and pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve as engineers. Our first big event? We’re thrilled to announce that we’ll be hosting a Battle Bots Competition right here at the university! This competition will challenge creativity, problem-solving, and engineering skills, and we can’t wait to see the incredible designs that participants will bring to life. The best part? Anyone can join! Whether you’re an engineering student or simply someone who loves building, creating, and problem-solving, this is your chance to be part of something exciting. This wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing team that’s driving this society forward: - Jose Saurith - President - Fatima Zahra Lasri – Vice President - Ahnaf Amin – Treasurer - Aurelie Janete – Media Management Together, we’re working to make this society a hub for innovation, inspiration, and hands-on learning. If you’re interested, don’t hesitate to reach out or scan the QR code on our posters around campus to join us. Let’s shape the future of engineering together! Industrial design education includes engineering mechanics, finite element analysis, material science, and manufacturability, etc. Then there's product safety regulations, ergonomics, and more. It's _very_ different from UX. But it's not considered a STEM field. Is it because industrial designers cultivate aesthetic capabilities through years of dedicated practice? Is it because our definition of STEM actively _excludes_ aesthetics? Aesthetics is an area where you can instantly see if something is good, but where it takes years, even decades, to be able to do it.
IDSA and the New School are hosting an online panel "WHY ISN’T INDUSTRIAL DESIGN CONSIDERED STEM?" on March 28th at 7pm ET. https://lnkd.in/dCi2znep

Highly recommended to check it out if you want to pursue your Masters in Industrial Design for the next academic year.
🌍 Scholarship Opportunity for International Applicants to TU Delft | Industrial Design Engineering MSc Programmes 🌍 Our faculty is home to over 2,000 students: the design engineers of the future. They come to Delft University of Technology to follow our bachelor’s and three master’s programmes. Our MSc programmes are delivered in English, attracting a vibrant mix of students, including approximately 30 per cent internationals seeking excellent #design education at the heart of a world-leading technical university. For international students interested in following one of our master’s programmes, we are pleased to announce the Ena Voûte Design Engineering Excellence Scholarship which is open for applications. This opportunity is designed specifically for exceptional Non-EU/EFTA students. Ena Voûte, Pro Vice Rector of International Affairs at TU Delft and former dean of IDE (2012 – 2022) comments: “As the design discipline orientates itself to global challenges such as sustainability and health, an international perspective is more important than ever. That is why I am so proud that we are able to support a talented international student via this scholarship each year.” 🎓 Scholarship Details: - Programmes: Available for Master’s programmes in Design for Interaction (DfI), Integrated Product Design (IPD) and Strategic Product Design (SPD) - What’s included: Full tuition fees (2 years) 🔗 For detailed information on eligibility and the application process, visit https://lnkd.in/eiwRjw8J #scholarship #bursary #design #designeducation #designmasters

✨The University of Canterbury's Faculty of Engineering is at the forefront of advancing engineering education through a variety of initiatives. These include mentorship programs, a renewed emphasis on diversity and inclusion, alignment with the new graduate attributes outlined by Engineering New Zealand Te Ao Rangahau and the Washington Accord (including ethics, bicultural competence, and sustainability), hosting a Major International Conference (Australasian Association for Engineering Education) and an Annual Learning and Teaching Workshop. Our evolving curriculum and teaching methods are designed to address the dynamic changes brought about by artificial intelligence, ensuring a robust approach to ethics, indigenous values, and wisdom, as appropriate to the New Zealand context, and other critical areas. In this context, the establishment of an engineering education research group is a natural progression. During a recent discussion with IEEE Education Society (EdSoc) President Martín Llamas Nistal, a professor at the atlanTTic Research Center, University of Vigo, Spain, and Past President Edmundo Tovar, a professor at the Technical University of Madrid the idea of forming a local IEEE Education Society chapter in New Zealand South is a possibility. Such a chapter could enhance existing efforts, fostering collaboration and innovation in engineering education at regional and global levels. ✨The importance of engineering education lies in its potential to integrate what we have learned about learning as both an art and a science over the last two decades. By applying these insights, we can enhance recruitment and retention and further positive student experience and deepen alumni engagement. Its tragic that the quote "Ryan added that D&T is not just a practical subject and that “making is only 15% of it, while the other 85% involves ideation, problem-solving and innovating”. was drummed for 20 years if not 40 years yet, the field remains absolutely foreign to conservative and left leaning ideologies alike. Imagine being a scholar and child teacher of mathematics or science, never having too explain and justify their curriculum existence. Three papers for reference; 1) https://lnkd.in/gsAkqNvj 2) https://lnkd.in/grbQeGxe 3) https://lnkd.in/gKVwxcwp
Later this week, a report will be released with some shocking facts about the state of design education in UK schools, specifically Design and Technology. More importantly, it will highlight what needs to be done to save the subject, which cannot be sustained with the rapidly declining number of teachers, according to The Design & Technology Association CEO Tony Ryan MIET FRSA . Read more in The Guardian/Observer about why its worth saving from industry leaders like Panasonic's Rowan Williams, award-winning chartered engineer Yewande Akinola MBE FIET HonFREng and Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd's Marek Reichman. https://lnkd.in/esw-rGSY
