#Biotechnology dating back to ancient times with practices like fermentation, the use of enzymes and yeast, has always played a crucial role in our #food system. The Biotech4Food project granted under the #I3instrument has the ambition to re-enforce the use of biotech in the agri-food system in creating a more resilient and circular #Europe. To facilitate this endeavor and support companies in adopting biotech solutions, the team has prepared a survey in different languages to gather valuable insights. Your input is crucial ! Fresh from the BIC matchmaking event, we had an inspiring intervention from Mr. Hans Ingels, Head of Unit at European Commission with focus on Bioeconomy, Chemicals & Cosmetics. He highlighted the key barriers and challenges facing biotechnology development in Europe, such as: Research and technology transfer to market; Regulatory complexity; Access to finance; Value chain obstacles; Intellectual property; Public acceptance; Economic security and; Skills. We are encouraged to learn that the European Commission is actively addressing these issues. As part of the European #S3 network, representing the Ingredients for a Circular Economy partnership and leaders of the ongoing Biotech4Food granted under the #I3instrument, we fully align with these observations and are eager to contribute to discussions aimed at facilitating and accelerating the use of biotech for greater efficiency, innovation, and sustainability. #CircularEconomy #Biotech4Food #GreenInnovation #Sustainability #FoodSystems #Biotechnology #SustainableInnovation Wagralim, the Agri-Food Innovation Cluster of Wallonia | Flanders Food Productions | Valorial, le réseau innovation agri-agro | Innov'Alliance - Pôle de compétitivité de la Naturalité et des filières du végétal | Galicia Food Cluster | ANFACO-CECOPESCA | CNTA | NAGRIFOOD - CLUSTER AGROALIMENTARIO DE NAVARRA | Agrifood Clust-ER | ART-ER S. cons. p. a. | Region of Central Macedonia | ATECluster Thessaloniki Greece | @SMART FOOD Cluster (Lithuanian food exporters association (LitMEA) | Foodvalley NL

🔥 Check out GFI's first column for Nature Magazine on how the Asia-Pacific region is leading the charge in alternative protein development, investment, and scientific progress. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eZZkkiGd “Meat production is long overdue for an upgrade,” say co-authors Ryan Huling, Wasamon Nutakul, PhD, Samuel Goh, and Doris Lee. “Asian innovation hubs have the capacity, workforce, and incentives to achieve taste parity for plant-based meat, resolve technical challenges, and take cultivated meat from test kitchens to supermarkets around the world.” While harnessing the full potential benefits of #alternativeproteins is both a scientific and a commercial challenge, many countries in the region are leaning in with government funding initiatives to accelerate innovation in the field. Between 2020 and 2023, researchers in the Asia-Pacific region published more than 400 papers aimed at closing alternative protein knowledge gaps—nearly twice the U.S. scientific output in the same period. In total, Singapore has invested 24 times as much public funding as a percentage of its gross domestic product into protein innovation as the U.S. has. "Now that Asia’s political leaders have embraced the ‘what’ and ‘why’ of alternative proteins, scientists have been tasked with answering the ‘how’," add the column's co-authors.

In 2020, Singapore made headlines by becoming the first country to approve the sale of #cultivatedmeat, a product developed by Californian company Eat Just. However, The Straits Times recently reported that production seems to be halted. #NTUsg Professor William Chen, director of the Food Science and Technology Programme, said in an interview with The Straits Times that the high cost of the culture medium, essential for cell multiplication into tissue, could be a significant challenge to the scalability of such #meatalternatives. He also highlighted the significant investment required in the #research and development needed to find substitutes for bovine serum, a conventional growth supplement derived from the blood of unborn cow foetuses, and the energy-intensive production process of cultivated meat. He suggests that renewable energy sources, such as solar energy, could make production more sustainable in the future. Despite these challenges, Prof Chen believes that the industry is in its infancy and still has potential to provide another viable meat alternative: “These are new technologies. We should give them space to grow. There are bound to be setbacks here and there, but this is not the end of the story." Read more: https://lnkd.in/gZNvhtWy #NTUsgProfs
