Under the auspice of the Belgian Presidency, Wagralim, the Agri-Food Innovation Cluster of Wallonia is organising a one day event on 11th April. During this day, we will have the opportunity to listen to several high-level keynote presentations from European Commission, the Wallonia government and the regional innovation initiative strategies. This morning session is hybrid, with B&B meeting possibilities.   In the afternoon, several thematic workshops will be organised on water, biosolutions, valorisation of food wastes & by-products, derelict and degraded lands restoration, AND we are delighted to announce the organisation of its 1st Biotech4Food regional workshop in collaboration with IIS Protewin, and IIS FoodBooster. MoHERST leads Roundtable Discussion on STI for SDGs Roadmap Project for Africa   The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology (MoHERST) hosted a pivotal roundtable discussion on the development of a roadmap to harness Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Project.   The meeting was held on Tuesday 30th January 2024 at the MoHERST Conference Hall.   The event brought together key stakeholders, experts, and partners to deliberate on strategies to harness the power of STI in achieving sustainable development objectives.   The roundtable discussion, held under the auspices of the STI for SDGs Roadmap in Africa project, marked a crucial step in shaping effective policies and strategies to bolster innovation ecosystems in Africa. The project, a collaboration between the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the Directorate General for International Partnerships (DG INTPA) of the European Commission, seeks to align STI initiatives with SDGs, particularly focusing on enhancing food self-sufficiency.   Specifically, the key objectives of the project include: Information Sharing: Participants engaged in comprehensive discussions on the STI for SDGs Roadmap in Africa project, sharing insights and experiences to better understand the challenges and opportunities within the Gambian context;   Prioritizing Sustainability Issues: Stakeholders collaborated to identify and prioritize sustainability issues within The Gambia's food system, laying the groundwork for targeted interventions;   Mapping Existing STI Instruments: A detailed exploration of the current STI instruments in The Gambia took place, enabling participants to identify areas for improvement, update existing tools, or create new instruments.   During the roundtable discussion, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Technical) of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology, Mr. Mucktarr M.Y Darboe underscored on the significance of the roundtable discussion. He said the discussion has demonstrated the commitment in leveraging Science, Technology, and Innovation in addressing the pressing challenges in achieving sustainable development.   DPS Darboe went further to say that the insights shared during the discussion will guide future policies and initiatives of the Ministry towards ensuring a more food-secure and sustainable future for The Gambia.   Dr. Pierre Rialland, Representative of Joint Research Center (JRC) commenced by expressing his heartfelt appreciation to MoHERST in leading the roundtable discussion. He added that the collaboration with MoHERST is pivotal in advancing the STI for SDGs Roadmap in Africa project.   Furthermore, Dr. Railland reinforced that the engagement and commitment shown by Gambian stakeholders today will undoubtedly contribute to shaping effective STI policies and strategies in alignment with European Union priorities for cooperation with Africa.

Fresh from the BIC matchmaking event, we had an inspiring intervention from Mr. Hans Ingels, Head of Unit at European Commission with focus on Bioeconomy, Chemicals & Cosmetics. He highlighted the key barriers and challenges facing biotechnology development in Europe, such as: Research and technology transfer to market; Regulatory complexity; Access to finance; Value chain obstacles; Intellectual property; Public acceptance; Economic security and; Skills. We are encouraged to learn that the European Commission is actively addressing these issues. DG RTD has released this new report: "Food 2030 Research and Innovation – Pathways for Action 2.0" As part of the European Commission’s Food 2030 initiative, this report aims to guide the future of research and innovation policies. It's a roadmap aligning with #HorizonEU , the farm-to-fork strategy, the #EUGreenDeal , and beyond. The report sets out 11 pathways for action where research and innovation can concretely deliver co-benefits related to nutrition, climate, circularity, and communities, at multiple levels: from local to international. It also underlines that a systemic, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach to research and innovation is crucial for success and improved impact. 💡 🌏 The Food 2030 pathways are now actively shaping projects and initiatives under Horizon Europe (2021–2027), years providing vital funding for innovative endeavours across Europe and beyond. In this first phase of the project, all partners are engaged in research on current legislation to prevent food waste. 🔎 The research moves on three levels of legislation: European, national and regional. This is to enable a screening of the current situation. However, how and what we eat are complex issues and are embedded in food cultures, which in turn are a key part of every culture and express how people deal with material and immaterial resources and limitations.   Despite this, when it comes to making our food systems sustainable, food cultures are still not given sufficient consideration.
