Good Distribution Practice (GDP) Good distribution practice (GDP) is a set of guidelines that helps ensure that products are consistently produced and controlled to the quality standards appropriate for their intended use. GDP can be used in the food industry as well and covers everything from warehouse management to transportation to customer delivery. By following GDP guidelines, food producers can help ensure that their products are safe and high quality. Warehouse Management Warehouses must be organized in a way that enables easy access to products with the closest expiration. This requires proper rotation, which involves moving products that are closest to their expiry date to the front of the shelf, and newer products to the back. This practice helps ensure that products are sold before they expire, reducing waste and improving food safety.

June 7th marks World Food Safety Day. Through this international date, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) pursue efforts to mainstream food safety in the public agenda and reduce the burden of foodborne diseases globally. Food safety is a shared responsibility between governments, producers and consumers. Everybody has a role to play from farm to table to ensure the food we consume is safe for consumption. One of the standards that ensure food safety is product traceability. In the retail food industry, maintaining food safety is paramount, not only for regulatory compliance but also for consumer trust. Air purification systems offer a proactive solution by controlling airborne pathogens that can compromise food quality and shelf life. While traditional sanitation protocols remain indispensable, integrating air quality technology can provide an additional layer of protection, helping to ensure that the products on display remain safe and fresh for longer. This dual approach strengthens supermarkets' commitment to health and safety, reinforcing customer confidence in the quality of their purchases.

Based on FDA’s Food Traceability Rule, many food producers are making great strides in advancing food traceability. However, a few are taking shortcuts, that will hinder progress, result in an inability to accurately pinpoint contaminated food, and contribute to passing bad and inaccurate data along the food chain. Ready my interview with Progressive Grocer to learn what pitfalls to avoid.

Leveraging new and emerging technologies for compliance with FDA's Food Traceability Rule isn't just about meeting regulations; it's about revolutionizing our food supply chain for the better. As the saying goes, "battles are won & lost on logistics," and the same holds true for ensuring food availability, efficiency, safety, resilience, and sustainability. Embracing these tools and approaches isn't just a smart move; it's essential for securing the future of our food systems.
There are different ways to comply with FDA’s Food Traceability Rule. How you decide to do so is up to you. But there are new and emerging technologies that can make it very simple & add value beyond food safety and mere regulatory compliance (more efficient supply chains, better inventory control, improved freshness, reduced food waste, etc) I remember an Army general telling me during Operation Warp speed, when we were working as a nation on vaccine distribution, say, “battles are won & lost on logistics.” I believe the “battle” for food supply chain availability, efficiency, safety, resilience, and sustainability will be won or lost on logistics too. Why not leverage the best tools and approaches to win the battle?
