Following my poll from last week, the results highlight a growing concern about how age impacts career opportunities in IT. This, in addition to the recent article I read suggests the tech industry tends to favor younger talent, often overlooking the wealth of experience that seasoned professionals bring. I think addressing these biases will strengthen technical teams. #ageism #tech #IT

💻 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 The Learning and Work Institute's latest research report, commissioned by Generation and supported by JP Morgan, looks at how we can better understand and enable people from all backgrounds to develop skills to progress into digital and tech jobs, highlighting which programmes and skilling pathways are most effective. Its key focus is on people from lower-socio-economic backgrounds and with lower qualification levels, and includes people in low paid work, underemployed or unemployed. The report includes the following recommendations for policymakers, commissioners and employers: • Local Skills Improvement Plans should include assessment of tech/digital skills needs, with employers investing more and public funding targeted on those that need the most help. • Employers, working with national and local government, should consider how they can promote careers in digital/tech, widen recruitment approaches and build career pathways. • Employers should increase investment in digital/tech training, supported by the Growth and Skills Levy and a new Skills Tax Credit. • The employment and skills system should be simplified, joined up, and able to adapt to rapidly changing digital and tech skills needs. #SocialMobility #DigitalSkills #EmployerInvestment #SkillsTaxCredit #LSIPs #Careers https://lnkd.in/eFTFK9-W

We really need to improve the pipeline of young talent, especially those with disadvantaged backgrounds going into tech!! "Work experience is one of the big things I’m looking at, specifically year 10 work experience. My report lays out eight things that we really need to do to improve the pipeline of young talent, especially those with disadvantaged backgrounds going into tech, and number one is more year 10 work experience programs within tech! When I speak about work experience programs, I don't mean just your local tech employer ringing on someone because, albeit that's good, I'm not saying that should stop. More tech employers I think should do that. But that is much more accessible to people that just have connections there, what about the others?'' This is a fascinating episode with our latest guest Henry Jones. Henry and Alicia Teagle discuss social mobility, the South West peninsular, diversity in tech and some ideas on how to close the ever growing digital skills gap in the UK! Dropping on Wednesday 5th June. 🎙 #techforgood #impact #socialmobility #southwest

If you’re young and looking for a route into an exciting and rewarding career in UK tech, this will be music to your ears. Not only is the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) launching a drive to get more people, especially Gen Z, to sign up to its Digital Skills Bootcamps, but it has also published findings from @Barclays Eagle Labs and @Beauhurst that the skills offered can lead to average salaries exceeding £70,000 - two and half times the UK average. I’ve spoken a great deal about the importance of improving tech talent and diversity in the sector as it continues to struggle to meet its entry level talent needs to build a sustainable pipeline for the future. DSIT reports that employers continue to struggle to recruit entry level talent to match their growth ambitions, and our own @Nash Squared Digital Leadership Report continues to find every year that a lack of digital skills is leaving organisations struggling to keep up with the pace of change. As Technology Secretary, @Michelle Donelan explained in the announcement, it’s not just about the financial rewards. It’s also about working in a creative role where you can find yourself “solving the world’s most pressing challenges”. This echoes what I have been saying for many years. We really need to turn up the volume on how technology is anything but nerdish. In fact, I can’t think of a more creative, rewarding, and exciting career that can genuinely make a difference.
