Would your novel play out like a silent film? Or would it be relatively unchanged if adapted to be performed on a small, empty stage? It’s unlikely that your manuscript hits either of these extremes, but the balance between dialogue and narrative may be off kilter all the same. What does this mean for your manuscript? SEPTEMBER 5, dir. Tim Fehlbaum - Movieweb Review "Superbly acted and edited, the film bursts at the seams with tension, anxiety, and professional resolve through 90 mind-blowing minutes. [...] Acclaimed German editor Hansjörg Weißbrich must also be lauded for his vital contribution. He and Fehlbaum constantly cut between roving action outside and boiler room pressure in the control room. Nothing is ever static. The ensemble shuffles between emergencies to track an evolving situation. Uncertainty and confusion has to be wrangled before anything goes live on air. All of this tension is created through skillful editing in post-production." https://lnkd.in/e-yQphmN.

Scott MYERS: Go Into the Story with Film Courage Big Takeaways: (1) Stories give us hope. "We watch movies because we want to feel something." (2) It's all about character. "Begin with character. End with character. Find the story in between." (3) Every writer is different. The journey is figuring out what works for you in your writing process. (4) Protag's journey = disunity to unity. Protag starts off in a state of disunity and their journey helps them discover their unity and path. "It's a journey of reattainment." Check out Scott's book! (5) Every day life is filled with story ideas. This includes conversations, news headlines, everyday people and events. You just need to be aware of this reality that ideas are everywhere. (6) Great scripts come from immersion in the characters. It's not about pages. It's about the characters. (7) Joseph Campbell is the man. "Follow your bliss." "If the path before you is clear, you are probably on someone else's [path]."

Last week I attended a brilliant BBC Docs Download panel discussion of the documentary 'Hell Jumper', with director Paddy Wivell, producer Adriana Timco, exec Collin Barr, and editor Rupert Houseman, hosted by Carl Callam. Hell Jumper is a mesmerisingly powerful film, showcasing the very best and worst of humanity through the polarising forces of love and war. It is the best documentary I have seen this year and I endeavour anyone who has not already, to go give it a watch. Thank you to everyone on the panel for the valuable insights on how to make a strong documentary. For those that could not make the talk, or anyone interested, here are some of the key points of wisdom I took away from the discussion: 1) Be bold and follow a direction. It’s sometimes necessary to hedge your bets but as much as possible strive to make something unique by going for one thing, rather than trying to do everything. 2) Stories come alive through authenticity. If you find the thing that makes something true, relatable and real, people will recognise that and appreciate it. 3) Surround yourself with excellent people who push you to rigorously think through decisions and make sure each one works. 4) Sometimes the best things / scenes / moments come from working hard through the areas that are presented as immovable obstacles. 5) The best testimony comes not necessary from making sure you get all the details you wanted, but from creating an environment in which the people talking feel themselves and comfortable. Through this, people are much more likely to speak openly, honestly, and often surprisingly. 6) Find the light in the story. There is so much negativity in the world, films must try to capture the human (or non human) beauty in the world and provide a beacon of light that offers fresh perspectives on situations.

"Beyond 1984: Julia's Revenge" - short film about Orwell work In this short film, I explore the story of Julia, the co-protagonist character in Orwell's “1984”, long after she has been tortured by the forces of Big Brother. This micro-story seeks to reflect on resilience and the ongoing struggle for freedom. I hope this new perspective on Julia inspires everyone to think more deeply about the issues of control and resistance in our world today. In “1984”, Orwell explored totalitarian control and the manipulation of reality, in what ways do you think these themes are relevant in our digital world today? #orwell #book #midjourney #runway #short #1984
